This is ate up. It is bad enough that we can't find a place to park sometimes and they wake us up when we are on a ramp. but if you are in a truck stop they should not bother any trucker sleeping. Would these cops mind if we go to their house and beat on their door when they are asleep? Hello I am a trucker I saw your cruiser parked in the drive. Can you tell me how to get to this shipper?:biggrin_2559: It used to be if you were in a truckstop and was in either seat DOT could search your truck or ask to see your logbook, but if you were in the sleeper they were not suppose to wake you. It is bad enough we got lot lizards, crack heads, bums, waking us, but now the cops? They want truckers to follow the HOS to keep tired truckers off the road? Well here is a bright idea, Allow us to sleep with out waking us up!:biggrin_25510:

This has happened at the Flying J's.

    Effingham, IL
    New Caney, TX

I can't recall the third location, so I prefer to not list it.

I agree it should not be allowed. I have been in truckstops with curtains opened and watching tv. You can see the bears routinely drive through the truck stops through the night.

Well if they wrote up a report on the inspection than yeah you would have to show for the time they wasted on you, remember log book= federal document. I like Brickmans suggestion of them getting a search warrant.

I don't mind the fuzz making a loop thru the lot. One delivery I had in New Orleans after Katrina was guarded by off duty fuzz picking up some OT, I slept like a baby on those nights. Not knowing when a fuzz might roll thru could help cut down on lizards and other bad behavior. I've even seen them looking for a specific plate number. I assumed that some one was in deep doo doo, but I have no use for them waking truck drivers up simply to do a search. They can wait until their 10 hr break is up.

The REAL problem is, it is ONLY Flying J that allows DOT to "harass" drivers. I was woke up at the Flying J in Provo about 12 years ago, and I told them to go take a "Flying ****". The week after Landline published an article warning Flying J was allowing the DOT to harass drivers in the SLC area.
Flying J doesn't give a CRAP about truck drivers and considers them a nuisance.

Legally, they can't unless they witness a crime and persue the driver onto the property. So, they ONLY enter Flying J property to HARASS drivers with Flying J's permission.

Know your rights: readers respond to Effingham police searches
    12/4/07
News spreads fast among the trucking community.
Several Land Line readers and OOIDA members called and wrote letters regarding an investigation at a Flying J truck stop in Effingham, IL on Friday, Nov. 30.
A news story posted on Land Line Magazine’s Web site Friday detailed OOIDA member Richard Donais’s story. Donais, who awoke to policemen knocking on his truck door early that morning, gave consent to allow police to search his Volvo dry van but said he isn’t sure whether he wants to stay at the Flying J in Effingham again.

More than a dozen e-mails were received by magazine staff during the weekend from several truckers who said they’d never seen investigation circumstances as bizarre as the one Donais experienced.
Jeana Hysell, director of safety for one motor carrier, said drivers should have some safe haven where they won’t be hassled by authorities.
“When drivers park in a truck stop, the drivers are aware of lot lizards waking them up, but COPS?” Hysell wrote to Land Line.
The police chief in Altimont, IL, confirmed that his officers began an investigation detail at 6 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, in conjunction with the

I see they didn't even have the courtesy to answer the question about sleeper berth time. What a bunch of morons! I'd be really ticked if a cop was knocking on our truck at 6 a.m. that's for sure. :biggrin_25510: And I'd keep a copy of this article on the truck and say NO!!!:yes2557:
