Ah rick its sure nice to get to know the guy who owns the oil patch.no don't worry about doing safety courses any company that isn't prepared to put you through whatever they need probably isn't worth working for. No not sending any part of my resume. You create one showing YOUR skills talents knowledge abilities experience base.resumes are nice but I have gotten just as many or more jobs from walking in and doing an interview. Some of them I filledout the application after the interview just so they had the information on file. I don't know about the rest but we are just crawling along.our guys are lucky to get 4-5to working days a month.unless you find someone who is much busier it won't matter what you do they don't hire green hands when they have local experienced guys coming in. Don't worry about Ricky even us Alberta guys, half of us were originally from somewhere else too. Stop looking for a free handout with accommodation and moving. Load up your car get a bus ticket whatever and come on out. Its what we all did.

No no response on the Suncor / Syncrude / Albian Sands articulated rock trucks or the heavy haul trucks? I'd like to know about them. I think thats where I want to be now but I am debating taking the 6500.00 Keyano College Heavy Equipment operator course in ft mac at suncors training facility.
any input? -
Question - what's the thoughts on wiggle room/negotiation with some of the bigger players like Sanjel, Halliburton, Baker Hughes etc?
If they offer base, bonus, etc can you negotiate? If they don't offer accommodation costs (for non-camp) or travel costs, can a guy negotiate on that? They say "never accept the first offer", but if they have standard packages they can't go above, how does a guy know he is getting a fair deal? -

@fresh yeah I know. The potential earnings increase is definitely there over 2-3 years for sure with training, seniority/service/experience.
For a guy that's not living local it's tough for the first year with travel and some accommodation costs (for shop days).
Anyhow - for those not here in AB right now I can tell you it's a fact that there are hiring signs just about most places. Whether you want temp winter or perm work it is here. Leads come from online applications but you probably have to be a real person with facetime to close a deal.
I would be sure to scroll back and read what has been said before by experienced people. For a new guy (new to the patch and/or new class 1 driver) they WILL hire you and send you out into the bush in hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment - but look at what has been said - you are looking at $60-70k first year gross with some travel and accommodation costs of your own (if not in camp). Longer term, maybe three years $100-140k is easily achievable with committment, training, experience, and crew turnover.
My conclusion is: yes there are some big-paying jobs but they are specialty roles and/or are earned based on experience. Also, for greens, you will need to prove yourself, get experience, prove you are reliable, safe, and can learn. The rest will come as a result of your own hard work. On the plus, yes there is a ####load of work available even now while it is not crazy busy. Get here now, sleep in your truck, do whatever, or wait til January. But do not expect to be flying back east every off rotation with ten grand in the bank.
Also for new drivers - your class 1 is a "golden ticket" - to an opening, not to the big money. It puts you ahead of the class 5 wannabes who are begging for companies to pay for their driver training. You win - you go to the top of the pile while the class 5's do swamping or deliver pizza.
Just my personal experience this past few days in AB and about a month of job searching prep.
Hope this helps. -
Keyano program I am thinking of doing the same. There is a waiting list tho and you need to go there for an interview before acceptance. There are 15 ppl in each class running once a month except July and August. There is a possibly 3 month work program coop thing but it isn't guaranteed. Most of the time you need to live in Fort Mac for the haul truck jobs. Imperial Oil in Kearl does the fly in fly out stuff but beggers cant be choosers. Anything else you want to know?
Onetrack Thanks this. -
