What is the difference from driving company & have them do all the paperwork,, rather than driving for a company that pays you straight pay & leaves it up to you to pay your own tax's ?? is this hard to do ??
& should i be on the look out for any companies that offer this type of pay ??

Most of the companies that would want to pay you a 1099 are only doing so to avoid paying their part of employee payroll taxes. That in and of itself should tell you most all you need to know about said company.
-
It is not hard, but are you an independent contractor? I have never heard of a company issuing 1099s, as a company driver.
-
Yep, if they supply the vehicle and tell you what to do you are an employee. Usually that type are dodging their responsibilities as an employer. An employer is suppose to hold out taxes, social security and match it, unemployment insurance and workers comp insurance at a minimum.
Owners of a couple trucks do it everyday because many are not aware of the employment laws or trying to save a few bucks. Though if they ever got audited, a complaint filed or you got hurt there would be some explaining to do followed by penalties and fines.
If they beat the gov't, who else will they beat? I see it as a red flag from a drivers standpoint.
If you decide to pay your own taxes only you how good you handle money. You have to set aside your tax money and not blow it. Usually people pay quarterly or yearly which can be expensive. When I had a unrelated company we paid quarterly through our bank. You can pay the IRS directly or through an accountant too. You can go to IRS.gov and find your options.
Then are you going to pay your own social security in or go hungry when you get old? What if you become disabled in an accident? Health insurance is a must have now a days the way medical care costs. Those are important things to look at. -
1099 is one of the biggest con games of bottom feeders everywhere..

This is the reason virtually EVERY trucking company offers lease programs, o-o programs, etc, and have teams of people trying to push drivers away from company driver (employee), to a "contractor" position, with fantasies of "being your own boss", "making much more money", "driving the truck of your dreams" ... as they laugh all the way to the bank after the poor driver signs the deal and literally sign much of his life and rights away. Do some o-o's and contractors make money? yes if they're at the right company with the right business strategy, the right work ethic, the right financial backing and cushion ... and nothing goes wrong. Otherwise, be happy and proud to be a company driver making a fair wage and requiring no higher education. If you're getting jerked around continuously, go somewhere else.
If the equity in the truck you're driving is not yours, and someone else is paying the note, you MUST be receiving W2's and having appropriate taxes deducted from your pay check, and NOT being paid as a "1099 contractor" -

thanks for the reply's..
the company that i speak of is in las crus ( sorry 4 the spelling ) new Mexico. I just got of the phone with them yesterday. I have never done 1099 tax stuff before by myself..
I did call my tax lady who does my tax's & she told me that is fine,, but that i would need to set aside a certain %%% of my pay check each week to cover myself.. & yes ,, medical & any other tax's are my responsibly. is totally up to me..
but i dont have much of a choice ... I have tried a lot of companies & so far,, none will consider me as a driver.
meaning,, I have 6 years experience but not that much experience & it seem's that this company might give me a chance.
I,m just trying to find a job.. most companies want 3 to 6 month's recent in the past 3 year's, or people right out of school. all i have is 3 1/2 months in the last 3 year's. that is not enough for most companies..
So,, if it mean's to go to this company in new Mexico so i can get at least a year under my belt. then do you guy's think i,m making the right choice ??
thank you,

You may end up working for them until they fold, abandon their drivers, and not be available to serve as a work reference later. Be careful. If you're even the least bit concerned about this company's reputation and longevity possibility, I'd steer clear. Start as a student if you have to somewhere else. If you're experienced, it will show, and you will speed up the advancement process from student, to apprentice to solo.
Depending on choices we soon make as a nation, but regardless, I feel the next 1-3 years are going to cull out a lot of smaller carriers who can't compete in the new era of trucking and economic realities.
