Can anyone please tell me what new-hire background investigations consist of? When applying as a new driver what types of information and documentation do companies typically require? Thanks

I dont know about all companies, but we check your mvr, your criminal history (felony and misdemeanor) and your work history.

How far back on the work history, and what information/documents are required?

We verify at least 3 years. If for some reason there is not enough experience with in that 3 years, we may go back further, so we actually ask for a 10 year work history on the app. Most of this can be verified with your ssn, date of birth and a signature. If there is a period of time that you are self employed we may ask for taxes.

Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it. Can I ask a bit more please? lol. In what form, if any, do you verify beyond getting ssn, dob, and signature? I have some issues. First, I haven't filed a return in the past couple of years. Second, I have some employment gaps, and for an employer from a few years ago I don't have a single reference, ie, they can only verify that I work there, but the turnover was so high, my individual supervisors left some time ago. And I did get fired from a job a few years ago.

I should add the following: I'm trying to break into the business, so none of my work history is trucking-related anyway. It's just that I know the DOT regs require at least 3 yrs employment verification, but I don't have a clue how that's implemented. Suffice it to say from my previous post that I've had a rough time of it in recent years, and I'm trying to start a new life.

We have a few different ways to verify. We use a website to verify what we can, if there isn't enough info on there we try to contact the previous employer. If that doesn't work, we ask for some type of tax form. And if all else fails we may ask for written explanation of something that can't be verified. Keep in mind other companies might have a different process.

But I will tell you right now, the harder it is to verify employment history, the longer it is going to take you to find a job. Many Hr people/recruiters are going to wonder why so much of your history is unverifiable. And in order for a person to put that much work in trying to verify your work history, they are going to need to be extremely impressed in other areas (squeaky clean mvr and criminal history).

Not having tax returns is probably going to hurt you the most. They are going to want to know why you haven't filed. If it is because you have been unemployed, you should be able to prove that through unemployment or by having someone you know to vouch for you.

I can prove the fact of my employment despite the returns. I can get my w2's for when I have worked, and I have a stack of documentation for the unemployment.
