Well for now, I got a job. They pay's not great but they're doing me a big favor. I was having trouble finding a truck to do my road test in. I have my permit and they basically hired me and are going to let me use their truck to do the road test. After that I will be driving a dump truck locally while I look for other work.

But i have to add a little something here... I , too, am in the army. I recently acquired my CDL last week. Now, I have driven trucks since 1995...in Europe, but that doesn't count here.Still and yet, I had to do it! I used the army's Tuition Assistance to pay for mine! See, I wasn't lucky(or unlucky) enough to get the 88M job! I'm a radio repair guy here!Anyway, once I really got into the course, I realized how much training varies! We never did brake test in Germany, and guess what? They don't do them in the army either! I asked! They didn't know what it was! It isn't taught in AIT! Basically, they just wanna get you through school. And if one wants to work as a trucker here, there's no getting around the Pre-trip Inspection! That's why companies are wary of hiring right out of the military, unless you complete their "Orientation Course." I think it's only right! So, don't fret it much, but do brush up on your pre-trip inspection. Because the DOT does check to see if it has been done. Take it easy everyone!!

Here is a company looking for a driver, I am assuming that they run in to your area, I don't know, but might be worth a call.rockytopcummins Thanks this. -
UPDATE: For all those who offered to help me and help me understand why things are the way they are, thank you again. I did find work for now. I ended up getting my permit and through a friend of a friend got hired at a construction company. I have been riding and driving with their senior driver and I'm being trained to haul equipment on a lowboy. I should be taking my road test some time in the next week or so at which time I'll start driving a lowboy and dumptrucks for this company. Starting pay is not that great but with the overtime hours I'm getting I'm doin alright, plus I'm home every night. I really enjoy it and I work with a great bunch of guys. Here's a pic of one of my loads.
