Hi: I am going to Swift in Lewiston, ID next month to take their road test (I already have my CDL for 6 years but have never driven so I am a student). I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of truck they would take me out in. My recruiter said a 10 speed. I am wondering how forgiving they are if you grind a gear or two, are the transmissions synchronized for easy shifting or will they be looking at me with a microscope? Thank you for your help. In other words, if I had a truck for 6 hours I would come back dialed in with regarding to shifting but not driving for a long time and getting in a truck with a guy or gal watching me during their road test and with all the pressure I have to succeed for my family I just wanted to get some input on this. Thank you kindly.

Maybe I misunderstood what you are saying. If you have never driven for a company how did you get a road test? I was under the impression that you get road tested after you go through there training program at the end. Or you go through some type of orientation then you have a road test. I have never heard of a company giving a road test to somebody that hasn't ever driven a truck except for when you got your license 6 years ago.

I also would highly suggest you take a refresher course or something if you haven't gotten to practice any of the driving maneuvers in 6 years. I dunno if there road test consists of just driving or if it's the whole pre-trip, parallel park, ally dock stuff.

Swift runs a mix of trucks and transmissions. Could be Volvo, freight liner, or international. The older equipment had ten speeds but most of their newer trucks have 9 speeds. The transmissions are non synchronized but if your just starting out as a student they will teach you how to drive them. I assume they are going to put you with a trainer for 6 weeks or is this what this road test is to determine?

They have their driving academy where you attend to get your CDL and they also hire folks like me who already have a CDL, but give people who already have a CDL their internal road test (not DMV road test). I have want to trucking school but just held it in my back pocket until one day I could change careers. So I have already passed my DMV long ago and still have my CDL but Swift wants to take me out when I get their and make sure I could drive good enough to go out with a trainer, right after their 3 day orientation.

Yes Milktanker - The Swift road test (what the recruiter called it) is to see (even if I have a CDL) that I am even worth going out with a trainer. I can back and parallel so I am confident with that. Just concerned about the shifting. They understand I am a new inexperienced driver - just happen to already have my CDL. Thanks.

I have never heard of this. I had no idea a company would just let you take a road test without having any experience and without having you go through there training program. Certainly learned something today if that's an option.

I have my CDL and everything I heard about them was you go through the company training program then take a road test at the end.

Understood Brownsfan 16. I am due there in Lewiston the 24th of this month to take the DOT physical and orientation so YES IT IS TRUE. I read some reviews/input that they just take you around the block and also some input saying their "road test" is about 20 minutes long and as long as you don't go through a red light or something you will pass. But it is because of the conflicting things I have read that are making me reach out to maybe hear from someone who has been in my exact situation with Swift in Lewiston. I am assuming they want one to succeed and would be somewhat forgiving. Got my hotel and bus ticket already from them.

Besides their academy, they are also a recruiting and hiring facility and not only a school. They hire drivers too. Makes sense because even if one has a long, good driving history with other companies, but you wanted to work for Swift, I am sure Swift would hire you as soon as they took you around the block just to see.

Don't know about Lewiston, but Edwardsville is about a twenty minute check ride, consisting of surface streets, highway and backing to a dock. They look for upshifting, downshifting, braking, using mirrors, lane control, etc. You must double clutch ALWAYS and never coast. Grinding a gear or two won't hurt you, but if you are completely clueless, they may choose to send you home or work with you, depending on what they see in you. The truck they used had a nine-speed, and if you accelerate and decelerate smoothly, you can upshift at 1300 rpm's and downshift at 1000 rpm's and all will be good. Downshift to 5th when coming to a stop, then as truck almost comes to a stop, clutch out of fifth and select the gear you will start out in (2nd or 3rd).
