Last word I got from a reliable source is that trucks with mechanical engines will not be exempt. So they will either be obsolete, or relegated to intrastate only operations, as FMCSA has no authority over intrastate, unless someone developes an E-log that meets specs for mechanicals.
Do you feel elogs should be mandatory or optional?

Nope I m good. People welcome it with open arms, it is no wonder to me why we are where we are!

You think they could make an elog that goes off of GPS location only. As in, you move more than "x" amount of yards or meters and it puts you on line 3 instead of going off of engine ECM readings? I'm sure someone could make the tech to do it, there are a pot of guys running mechanicals that will be out of business if they have to buy a new truck I'm sure.

Actually, they can. It happens all the time, in different industries. Do you think a DC-3, that is still in commercial service, is still running the same avionics as back in the 1930s and 1940s, when they were first built?DrtyDiesel Thanks this.

That's a good point.

So essentially you're saying you won't work in an industry that requires EOBR's because they prevent you from operating illegally. If you think you're helping your cause by posting this on a public forum, you're wrong.Autocar, DrtyDiesel and peterd Thank this.

Please explain exactly how voicing an opinion in this thread will prevent the creation of regulation. Its an internet forum. It has about as much power to change government regulation decisions as a goldfish has on the path of a hurricane.Autocar and DrtyDiesel Thank this.

This is true. But I don't believe there are any DC3's in use in commercial passenger service in this country. Freight ops, yeah. But not scheduled passenger. And that point is significant because the FAA requires equipment for aircraft used for scheduled passenger service that is not required for freight ops or 'on demand' passenger ops. So yeah there are very few DC3's operating with the same avionics as when they were first built, but there also very few (probably none?) that could be used for scheduled passenger service in this country and the cost to retro fit the required equipment for those ops has a lot to do with that.

I will long be retired by the time they try to force old the mechanical trucks off interstate travel. Looking at 20 years before something like that would take place. Unless the government does a "cash for clunkers" type deal with older trucks and give oh I don't know lets say $30,000 for each truck and give grants so owners can go and buy new trucks. Like I said there is way to much involved that will not allow an industry wide mandate.

its not about voicing opinion, its about having a desire to have common ground results
that takes communication, whether it is paul revere shouting "the british are coming" or the arab spring sending out twitter messages and creating a revolution, this forum is a form of communication for truck drivers,
nothing can be accomplished if the leaders are not of like mind, whether that is a congressional meeting or an internet forum, communication and a desire to achieve results is the first ingredient
years ago, everyone listened to the radio, and orson welles war of the world created havoc, solely because people were tuned in to a radio program and that too was communication
so if you are here to needlessly vent, then you are right, its a waste of time
but if you are here to communicate and share ideas and approaches to your fellow drivers, this is only a beginning of what needs to be done
and unfortunately, we see nothing eye-to-eye
NOTHING
because even if we had a leader, half of us would hate him/her, the other half would love him
some say we need to strike, i personally think that is the worst thing we can do, because of the political climate and the fact that 90% of the drivers would be against the strike and what would be the aims of the strike, and who is the leader?
whatever solution we come up with, the majority is against it, so whats the purpose?
my purpose for even joining this forum was to see what other truck drivers are thinking and sadly, it is nothing but a repeat of what you hear at truckstops, confusion and disorganization
so how can we push any government regulation in any direction when we cant agree on the problem, much less the solution?
