Oh, I'm definitely going to "try it and see what works"... that's one of the reasons I became a ham.

My original thought was about putting a WiFi antenna inside the truck; the loss through a layer of fiberglass will be quite a bit less than 20 feet or so of coax needed to get it inside the truck.

Also, a fiberglass roof leaves open the possibility of using VHF halo antennas for SSB.

Hello folks ... I am looking at switching from CRST (what an expierence) over to Prime. To start with I am not under contract with CRST and won't have to deal with that crap. Just wanted to cler that before the comments come.

My questions are going to be pertaining to the Lease Operator side. If you don't knothe answer as a true fact then please don't respond.

I am looking at going to the Flatbed division but can run Refer as well.

Does Prime pay CPM or % of load value ?

If CPM does anyone know the AVG miles per week needed to break even ?

    Pet Policy ?

    Forced dispatch ?

    How long is orientation ?

    Is orientation paid ?

What is the training for Flatbed drivers ? Classroom or OTR with a Trainer ?

In a PM can anyone say what can be expected in pay per week ?

Anything I may have missed please feel free to mention as well.

    1. Prime pays % of load.
    2. Yes, you can have a pet. Deposit required. Not sure what it is for lease ops

Those are the questions I have the answers to.

Actually, I have a pad of them stashed away somewhere. Now, though, I use the battery powered version:

Yes, it shows R and X; the only thing it doesn't do is show the sign of X. However, a tweak of the freq knob will show that...

Coming in with experience you might be able to do the boot camp for flatbed training. That said.... If you have no experience go out with a trainer. There is a lot to remember when dealing with loads. Best to have someone there to teach you the right way.

72% of linehaul, calculated fuel surcharge and 72% of anything more collected than that, accessorials.

$2500 in gross revenue is pretty much a break-even week for a solo, $3500 is a reasonable week, $4500 and up is nice! Your fixed costs are going to run somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 - $1200 per week. It depends on what you lease, whether you're including health insurance, basic accounting service (highly recommended,) APU payment, etc. That's what you are going to pay whether you run, sit, or fool around with momma on the couch.

I'd have to check to be sure.

Nope. However, if you turn down a load you're rotated to the bottom of the empty list in your area. That's fair... keeps folks from cherry-picking the loads. A lot of folks will then say that if you turn down a load, you'll get screwed by dispatch - that's never been my experience here.

I believe you'll be in on Tuesday... usual stuff. Physical, pee test, boring classes, Smith system. You choose a truck and can be out on Friday - IF you don't have any problems. Plan on being in the shop at some point to clear any problems you find on your initial inspection. Definitely get on the list in the APU shop for installation - idling will kill your settlements. So, you're probably going to be out sometime over the weekend, maybe Monday.

No, however your room and meals are covered while in orientation. After orientation is over (if you're in the shop) no, it's not covered. But by that time, you should have moved into your truck in any case.

I believe (since I'm a reefer guy) that you'd be going out with a trainer for 30 days worth of practical securement experience.

A lot of that is entirely up to you, and your right foot. For lease guys, the largest expense is fuel. Tame the foot, things are ok. Let it get a good case of "lead foot" going, and you can be pretty poor. I usually quote $1200 per week average solo lease on the reefer side, although with good luck, good mileage, that can go up quite a bit. With bad luck, a big fuel bill - a week in the shop (although you do get breakdown pay) it can be quite a bit less. You have to be a good businessman as well as a great driver.

You won't be getting more hometime, you will be working harder, and you must put money away for the weeks that your settlement is zero or in the hole. It happens. You must buckle down and do your own accounting on a weekly basis to know where your money is going and what you have to improve on to make money!

    Read this entirely:
