X-2......Its a fact, take it from me. I paid for 2 turbos in 1 day. I cleaned everything from the Air cleaner(R/R air filters) and tubing to the cold side of turbo, but didnt clean the air to air. Cat said I voided the warranty cause I didnt clean the WHOLE SYSTEM, its says it in the warranty. I was on the side of the road when mine blew and I figured what so hard about doing and R/R. Well I learned the hard way. Expensive lesson but That's how you learn in this business.
BTW, I would NEVER buy another CAT turbo again. Borg Warner is the way to go. I have a stage one I bought from turbo supply. It is a C-16 turbo with a smaller exhaust housing and no wastegate. And on another note, Garrett builds the turbos for CAT. You will see the difference in pricing on how much CAT makes on there turbos.

    CrabbyOlLady Thanks this.

If the PDI dealer at Moundridge doesn't have one I would bet that 4state in joplin does. They are a PDI dealer too. 286 mi from Salina.

Got lucky when the turbo blew chunks @ 7,000 miles (45' coach so yea, it sucked) but had a local mechanic tell me to check *everything* before firing it up after installing a BW on it instead of a CAT. For the better part of 38 years Borg Warner has never let me down - good to hear the same rules still apply.

What motor is in your truck? The turbo you have is EXACTLY what I've been wanting to replace my current 455 baby turbo with.

Dave i got a 5ek too started life as a 435hp, when i bought it the guy had put a bigger 600hp cam in it and a 1999 or 2000 2ws or 1wl 600hp ecm. He gave me the stock ecm for it but really wantin to have a file put in the stock ecm, what hp was yours and do u like the file u had put on the ecm?

I almost wonder if the ecm they put on on it has low nox and that why im still not digging the performance at times.

Mine also started life as a 435, but when it was inframe at 1,099,000 it was upgraded with 550 hard parts but had the stock ECM. When I bought the truck after 70,000 on the inframe I didnt know what hard parts was use until a local CAT shop I use told me I had 58's injectors and I can get more out of it. I went back found the invoice and compare the part numbers and all came back as 550.
Anyways, fast forward, after doing most of my research on here and other forums, I decided to have the 5DS file put in(601hp) and it came to life. After a couple of weeks after, I decided to upgrade the Turbo to a stage 1 B/W, cause I knew eventually the stock turbo would go. BTW, Im happy with the set up I have but I know I could get more HP but since Im in Komifornia, Im limited, I dont want to get that hefty SMOKE fine. Also, the 5EK blocks are weak and crack I believe over 750 HP.

Sorry i haven't had time to update. Well, i had to run to 4 State to get the turbo. 600 miles later i was back in Salina. I finally got back on the road 1am Tuesday. I was a little disappointed at first because there was a significant loss of power, but the longer she ran, i could see it coming back. I'm pretty satisfied overall with it. Exhaust temps and oil temps are down. The old turbo ran about 25#'s of boost. The PDI pegs the gauge. Is this normal? It's also blowing back thru the air cleaners. I guess it's time to get in touch with Mr Haney and see what can be done to the ECM. I think i bit by a bug somewhere in this process :biggrin_2559:

you will get that huff back through the air cleaners now that you dont have a wastegate just let off the pedal a little slower and it should go away. welcome to the addiction!
