If you're talking about the Volvo engines, then we have so much in common. The D16 almost pushed us into bankruptcy. When it did run, it was fuel efficient and had wicked power (but I'd rather pay more for fuel as long as I have steady income). Never had good customer service with ours - as soon as warranty was up we used a privately owned shop.
Stay away from Volvo!!

Is 220deg F tripping a check engine light? If it is not then that is not to hot. All modern diesels are running hotter than ever before thanks to emission control systems. But to me if one of our drivers tell me it is running hot (220 deg). Operating temperature is not 175-180deg. I would not even look at it unless it is setting a code.
What you are likely smelling in the cab(not that it is a good thing nor acceptable is the DPF. I hear a lot of complaints about those from drivers. -
What is DPF?

Diesel particlicte filter, filters any solids from going up the stack.. about every 200 miles it has to regeneratie (burn off) . Makes strong smells.

I'd say Volvo D13 is better the Paccar MX. Fuel system by Delphi is too expencive and easy to damage if you do not know how to remove. DEF system got no heated hoses as standard and this system fails in winter after truck was sitting at below zero temperstures

How right you are.

the moment the dealer said i had to pay for a repair while the truck was under warranty, i would have had an attorney on the phone

first of all, fan will kick on at 214 f and you can have a 180 or 190 f thermostat, so engine between 180 and 214 idle is acceptable, do you see coolant overflow?
d13 engine is a good engine with very low problem( usually) if you experience coolant overflow maybe a injector cupper sleeve.
do you have a on/off fan or a viscous?
