Flyinmusician has a good point, you have to be careful when getting directions over the phone. Like he said you maybe getting directions from a guy that drives geo metro into work everyday and has no clue about restricted routes or low bridges or trees for that matter. You need to make sure that the route you are being given is cool to drive a big truck down.
While on this topic you have to remember that bridges aren't the only thing you must look out for when venturing off the main roads. Powerlines, low tree limbs, rocks and obstructions on curbs and corners (especially when they are snow covered!), other vehicles parked all over, PROPANE TANKS, etc... You need to be very aware of your surroundings and take extra, extra caution in the winter when stuff is covered over in snow and also at night when there isn't much light to see your way. Its sometimes good to get out of your truck and take a good walk around and make some mental notes as to where your obstacles and such are.
Another thing to be aware is at some of the smaller shipper/receivers in the winter may not efficiently clear ice and snow from their driveways or parking lots and you can easily get yourself stuck trying to get in or out or turned around. Especially in close quarters. I highly recommend keeping a few bags of ice melt on board in case of these emergencies. I once pulled into a shipper and it was late at night and nobody was scheduled to show up till morning. When I pulled in I pulled nose up to a fence so that I would have room to back up and spin around and when I put it in reverse I went nowhere! My wheels just spun on black ice and I could only go in reverse because I was up against a fence. You can't throw chains in this situation because you don't want to tear up a customers driveway and you surely don't want to call a tow truck! A cheap bag of ice melt got me out of the situation in less than 2 minutes!flyingmusician and cmc308 Thank this. -
US17 in georgetown, sc.....all 4 lanes shut down due to construction and the signed detour sent all 4 lanes of traffic through this TINY subdivision.....no idea who's bright ####### idea that was, but let's just say an old, established oak tree with a 12 inch branch hanging over the road will win everytime when it meets your trailer roof.....and compounded by the fact that it was at a 4 way stop and it was shift change at the paper plant down the road plus all the beach traffic using that route so there wasn't any room on the road to start with. between watching the light poles angling towards the street and way too close for comfort to my trailer, all the traffic darting around on that tiny street, and the other trees right at the road edge, i never looked up and never say that huge branch hanging right out into my path......the only way to have missed it would be to have gone completely into the oncoming lane and with the volume of traffic that would have been difficult at best..... i just never saw it until it was too late.....the locals who came out to gawk at my misfortune told me 5 trucks had already hit the same tree that day and a mobile home mover had to come down the same road the day before and not only took the roof of the mobile home off on the same tree but also tore down every power line in the nieghborhood.....remember my earlier comment about common sense? whoever put that detour in place had none.....unbelievably i got a non-preventable for that one considering the extenuating circumstances of the fact the detour was signed and i was following the traffic control devices into a situation that was a no-win to start with
don't forget to look up either lolchompi Thanks this. -
Indeed. I stumped every one of my students when I was a trainer simply by asking how many sides the truck has. Every single one said 4.
chompi Thanks this. -
Front, back, sides, top and bottom of the combo or tractor and trailer separately?
