So eventually, I'd like to get a laptop and combo printer/scanner with gps and DDL software and try to stay under $1000 but still have reliable equipment. Is this reasonable? I can build my own stand no prob. It's been a couple years since Ive been in the market for another compy, so I am way behind the times. I was shocked that pc's still come with vista :biggrin_2556: . So what should I be looking for as far as processors and other components go?

You will probably have to go with a used laptop but its do-able for the price range you mentioned. The problem with the printer/scanner combo is its kinda big (and space is at a premium in a rig) but you can get one of these multi-function machines pretty cheap too.

As far as Vista goes its really a matter of which you prefer. I run a dual boot on my new laptop with XP Pro and Vista Home Premium and I find I use Vista more than XP. The only reason I can think of to use XP over Vista is you have ancient hardware and it cant do it, or you have ancient programs that are not compatible. My advice is to get a decent laptop and get Vista Home Premium (ie Dual core 1.8+ghz, 2gb ram, 120+gb HD).

Here are the spec's on my new laptop:

    dv9500t CTO | Dual Boot XP Pro + Vista Home Premium (32bit) | Intel Duo T7500 2.2ghz 4mb L2 Cache | 17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition BrightView Display(1680x1050) | 2GB RAM | NVIDIA 8600M GS 256mb | x2 120GB Seagate 7200rpm SATA Hard Drives | Wireless AGN | SuperMulti DVD+/-RW 8x with LS | 8 Cell Battery | HP Imprint Finish + Webcam + Mic

    Hmmmm

You can run down to Wally World and check their "secret sales" (you have to ASK to see them, they are not advertised) I just scooped up a new laptop for $325.... 80 gig HD, 1 gig of ram (which I intend to increase), Windows Vista (which I plan to dump), 17 inch screen. No it's not a MONSTER. But it will serve it's purpose well.

DeLorme Street Atlas 2008 with GPS $69.95

Drivers Daily Log -- Last I checked, about $40

    Printer -- under $40

Otherwise you might tie up about $1000 in a low budget set up. Buy only what you need. And you'll be fine. Buy a $3000 gaming laptop, and watch the tears flow when it hits the floorboard for the first time.

Yeah i dont need anything fancy, just enough to complete basic tasks and keep track of all my business stuff for a lease operator and hopefully soon after the purchase I will have wireless internet. Ive got a couple months to save. I do need a scanner. Maybe pick up a compact scanner and a compact printer.

You can get a really good deal on ebay for a printer. Often times dell and other computer companies will package a free printer with new computer orders. If you find out the model number and search it on ebay you can get one real cheap because thats what a lot of people do with the free one if they already have one.

Yes, I was talking about Vista cuz it brings the suck. And yes, I want this for my truck. Many drivers are running similar setups in their rigs. Especially O/O's and L/O's. I need the ability to scan receipts and other docs and print DDL forms. While broadband would be nice, I might have to settle for WiFi whenever I have the time to stop and search for it.
