Well, I've been trying to decide where I want to work. Seems that my age is a problem. I'll be turning 21 March 1st, and I'm trying to get geared up and ready to go trucking.
I don't seem to qualify for any of the decent companies. I know I gotta start somewhere, and it seems like Schneider is the only company that I could POSSIBLY get on with that isn't, in the opinion of most, an absolute crap outfit.
The companies I've looked into and don't qualify for are listed below:
Knight - Too young - must be 23
Marten - Too young - must be 22
Crete - Too young - must be 22
Roehl - I'm about 40 miles outside their hiring area
Maverick - Too young - don't remember the age but 22 or 23
May - Too young - must be 22
So I guess Schneider is my only reasonable choice.
I have a friend who is an O/O for Stevens, and he says they're a decent place to start, but does admit that there's alot of BS going on in that company, but it's better than it used to be. He says I could learn how things work and be in control more, but I know a company driver doesn't have the same control an O/O has.
So what do y'all think? Any advice?![]()

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Your age does seem to be a draw back, but don't blame the companies. Its their insurance carriers that are driving these laws.
Have you checked with Prime, Watkins Shepherd, Arrow, Melton? and then you might start checking with smaller local companies. In LA there should be plenty of local companies.
If you can't find a company that will hire you find the best job you can for the next two yrs and save as much money as you can so that you'll be able to survive thru school and training when the money will be tight.
Good luck with what ever works out. -
yeah check out millis transfer. yes they hire 21 year olds and htey have a school thats low cost. $2500 is what the school will cost ya
-
I never really picked up on Watkins Shepherd and Arrow being good companies. Melton website says it wants atleast 3 months OTR experience. I'm going to check into Prime.
BigPapa, The Millis website says you have to live east of the Mississippi River. I live about 200 miles west of it. -
You're going to be OTR most of the time for the first year or two anyway from what I read on here... you can't move 50 miles closer, to be in Roehl's hiring area? -
I really wouldn't want to move. That's alot of trouble.
-
ahh dont worry, you will find somethin...start local, easiest way to get going
i use to be in the same boat , but i found a company that would hire me at 21 -
Theres moving and then theres "Moving" wink wink. All you need is a family member or friend that lives with in thire hiring area. Its just an addy for mail to go to. It's not like anyone is going to come out and see if your clothes are there. At best later you put in for a change of addy, at worst you have to park the truck in that area and commute for your home time.

I thought most local companies were harder to get hired on?
What company do you work for now? -
You could try a construction co. One of them may be willing to put you in a dump truck or something.
