as a recruiter i can tell you that there are companies that will hire you, when you choose a school be honest and upfront about it and ask them for a listing of companies that hire out of their school and call and ask them if if would be an issue.

    Really depends on the charges.
Anything violence, theft or drug related is given much more weight in the decision making process.
DUI and anything involving vehicular is also a big deal.

Answer truthfully but only answer exactly what the question asks for. DO NOT LIE!!! They will find out! May not be right away but they will eventually find out and then you will be "up the creek"!

I'm still debating how to respond on the application to "have you ever had any expunged convictions", because there is a technicality involved under california law 1203.4 that does not require me to disclose the charges that have since been dismissed. They shouldn't even be asking this in the first place.

Hi Ms Joseph, I am also in a similiar situation. But I've done thorough research for months, and I found that there are companies out here that hire on a case by case basis. It seems to me that you worked in HR or you were a manager of some sort. My question to you is, once in the interview, how much of a shot/chance does someone with a criminal background really have, and are they allowing people who've made mistakes a second chance in the trucking industry? Also, if you are a convicted felon who's willing to be honest about your situation, what are some of the charges that you know for sure can be overlooked? I am aware that if its a drug charge, gun/violence charge, or anything of a sexual nature, the trucking industry may not be an option. However, my situation is none of the above. Do I have a chance? Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Some companies will try to trick you into telling them something, they can't otherwise find out, then they send you packing right back home. If they can't find out about expungment with a simple check, then don't tell them anything. Try it with one company and see if it works; if it doesn't, then you will know what to do with the next company. A company can't put something on your DAC if they find out something & haven't actually hired you yet.

be careful about that expungment though.

becuase your lifetime history of your mvr will still show things.

your criminal history can be erased. your mvr can't.

i stopped listing my dui a LOOOONG time ago.

but now i guess i'm forever stuck with listing it.

Thanks everyone again for the replies. I sat on this for 2 days now and I made a decision, I'm calling their bluff about being able to find out about my expungements and I will not be telling them. I'll let you know what happens.

Anyone telling you to lie on you applications is doing you a huge injustice. It's no problem for them. You answer all the questions as they are asked of you. Tell no more or no less. You lie or cover up and they find out not only is your job over for that company but just about every other company will look and see you're a liar. So you go from a very specfic charge to a very general one. Only common sense tells you that if there's companies out there that will hire someone with a felony then why wouldn't they hire someone that's had their record expunged?

Besides all that you're missing the whole point here. You're changing the problem from a felony charge that got expunged years ago to being a liar. The companies don't even care that you had a felony, isn't doesn't matter to them anymore. All that counts is if they are going to trust a driver with their very expensive equipment and cargo to a liar. So you're going to stand up and make a statement when it doesn't even matter. Well it's your life and if you want to trust your career and livelyhood to a few that got lucky go head. But I do believe that when or if you cross the boarder you'll have a problem. Then you'll wish you would have answered the question truthfully and you'll realize how stupid it was to lie.
