Decided to finally take the leap and jettison my current crap job (The biggest thing is I'm getting tired of dealing face to face with people All. The. Time. And I just happen to have a love affair with diesel engines). So put in some apps and got a call back from Stevens tonight, we're setting up for a Jan 14th start date in St. Louis (they offered me TX first but don't have anyone to sign some affadavit they are talking about). Gonna be interesting, I think. I might hate it, hoping to like it. At least I hear they are better than the absolute bargain basement companies usually.

ETA: They said I'd be getting a MO CDL permit and license. How does that work?

Honestly I would stay away from them unless thats your only option.. And even then I would think hard on it. My orientation had 69 people in it. Now why would a company need to bring in that many drivers a "week" if they were so great. Looking at there driver turnover rate should tell you about how good the company is behind there sales pitch.

you get your first permit and license in the state the school is in (missouri). after when you are on a truck they run you thru your home state and you transfer it over

Driving isn't for everyone and people wash out of orientation for a variety of reasons... failed drug tests, medical dq's failed background checks many many reasons... some find out that life on the road is not quite what they expected...

Stevens has issues, most companies do... but it is a place to start, and you have to start somewhere... plus the training is very in depth and top notch.

Just curious though Nash, the way you say "stay away from them" it sounds as if you are not at Stevens presently, but then you mention your orientation... are you a former Stevens driver? If so, what was it that made you leave?

OK, All of what you said needs some correcting....1st, before I start I am not supporting Stevens BUT . . THEY ARE A TRAINING COMPANY. They attract a great range of humanity so must fill the classes knowing a good number will drop out because of drugs, convictions, lying on app and pure incompetence. Next, they expect and hope that after being trained drivers will move on and get other jobs. They are not set up or operate with experienced drivers in mind, If you are not staying to be a trainer then move on and make room for someone that does, they are set up with training in mind. Driver turnover is not on their radar, they want driver turnover so they can train more, it is how they do business. With any training company saying they suck because the driver turnover rate is so high is completely missing the point, they are successful if driver turnover rate is high.

Oh your right I turned in my truck after 5.5 months. I started with them almost a year ago in December. Staying in one of the little run down motels they put you in having to fight to get on the little shuttle in the mornings. But I made it threw riding with a trainer. They made all of us do the pre alliance. When I was in my own truck they wouldn't let me get by the house for time off, I stayed on my dm about it until I was starting on my 4th month out. I had to give them an ultimatum, ether get me to the house or get me back to Dallas. Finally I got to go home. I forget his name but he kelp calling me at home to get me to sign the lease. I finally told him no im not doing it. When I came back from hometime I had a new dm and they didn't bother telling me. Finally after a week I had to as who he was. My miles dropped from right at 3k to 1000-1500 a week. Finally my last 2 loads. One was a 900 mile run that I couldn't unload for 4 days after I got there. The last one was 1200 that I got stuck with for 6 days waiting to unload in San Antonio. I told them as soon as I got unloaded that I was on my way to the yard to turn the truck in. they still sent me 3 more load assignments before I got to the yard and 2 more the next day when I was turning in my keys.

I guess I could have mention I got to see my house twice the whole time I was with Stevens. Not to mention my trainer didn't take a shower but every 4-5 days, he couldn't back his own truck, left me stranded in vence lambardi travel plaza for 5 days when he took time off. I could go on for awhile about how that place really is. But im on here with my phone and it don't let me see the full message when I type
