Averitt Flatbed - now sure how to post a new forum topic so I will post it here if it's ok. If someone can move it, feel free.
Anyway, I'm thinking about transfering to our (Averitt's) flatbed division. Can any of you flatbeder's give me the pro's/cons advantages/disadvantages to flatbed over van? Thanks.

I would love to hear more information about the flatbed side as well. I am scheduled to go to orientation on Dec. 9th for flatbed out of Jackson, TN. Any information would be nice. I have not had any luck finding any through internet searches.

All I know about the Flatbed side of Averitt is that it is growing fast and the drivers I talk to average 2700 miles a week. I have thought about going Flatbed myself but that is a younger mans game. I'll be 53 in January.

This has been a great week. Yesterday I went from Columbia, SC to Hickory, NC to pick up a load I dropped at our Knoxville yard last night. Then today I ran the daytime LTL from Knoxville to Eighty Four, PA. Got a preplan for a Mercedes load from Dublin, OH I'll take home to Chattanooga for a short weekend, then finish it off to Vance, AL on Sunday night for a Monday morning delivery.

Right at 3,000 miles this week. Best one in the past couple of months. I intended to run thru the till Thanksgiving but my FM said they just didn't have enough to keep me busy all weekend so I might as well do a 34 at home. I am taking a four day weekend for the holiday and will head back out the Monday after Thanksgiving. 4 days off will seem like a vacation.

I still love it here. There are little hassles from time to time like anywhere in trucking but 9/10's of the time it is top notch in my experience.

I did have a run in with the dispatch guy at Knoxville this morning. The load wasn't supposed to be ready until 8 AM. After my shower at 5:30 this morning I stopped by to see when it would be ready. It was ready to roll so he dispatched me on it. I said, "That's great...it will give me some extra time for bathroom breaks and such." He then tells me he set my ETA for 1430. I told him, "Good luck with that. That doesn't even give me time for any more than one bathroom break. My pre plan that I agreed to said deliver by 1700 and I'll have it there by then." He looked a bit irritated but such is life. I doubt he's ever driven a truck, let alone through the mountains of West Virginia. I got it there by 1530. That is only the second person in Averitt dispatch I have dealt with that was somewhat rude. I can live with it.

Hey thanks for your posts everyone, I am schedueled for orientation Nov,26. I'm told my training is in Cookeville with my trainer but will be based in Jackson,TN after I'm finish. Does Averitt pay for your hotel while in training , since they can not get me a trainer near me.

Hi guys, I haven't posted but once here but I have to say I have been with Averitt for two months and I like it so far, now everyday is not perfect but for the most part it's been good.i started out monday with a whooping 21 mile load I had comin out my reset at home, after that got a petco load to concord nc then picked up a load in kannapolis going to Hebron ky, I knew at that point I was gettin set up for a night ltl from Erlanger. I was right, got the night time ltl from Kentucky to Memphis. I got to Memphis on thurs and was wondering how the week would finish up as I only had 1200 miles I was worried that the week wouldn't end good, well soon as I started to wonder got a load going to Milwaukee that had had to be there by 12 fri. Also had a pickup ready for me comin back home so I wound with about 2700 miles, that was something I needed to finish strong. I just wanted to share my experience so far and thanks to Bigmike and everyone who shares positive experiences

Okay your question is a little confusing...Yes while your at orientation your hotel is paid along with breakfast everymorning. If you trainer main terminal is Cookeville you will most likely have to drive from Jackson to Cookeville during the weekend. I can't believe that they can't find a trainer close to you like in Memphis or even Mayfield. Theres probably 5-10 terminal closer to Jackson than Cookeville.

    tuckthetruck Thanks this.

corysti, thanks for the info.Yes my trainer is Cookeville and I'm gonna ask again to see if they have another trainer closer. I hope I don't have pay for a hotel, or drive three hours after getting off the truck to get home and back.

Cory, do you know anything about the flatbed side or do you know a flatbed driver that would be open to talking to me?

Corysti, thanks again! I talked to my recruiter and they will reimburse me for mileage while in training. I glad I went with Averitt. Thanks to you and BigMike for these posts.
