My wife mistakenly shredded my 2290 receipt which I paid about a month and a half ago. I registered the truck August 2. North Carolina wants a copy of the receipt to verify that the tax was paid. I have none of the dated and signed 2290 documents with the truck's VIN #. I can get a copy of the canceled check made payable to the US Treas. Anyone ever experience this situation? Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can go to any IRS branch office and ask them to print a copy. Bring your ss# or EIN# so they can find your records.

Sometimes, depending on the state, you can indeed use your canceled check to prove payment.

Most will likely want a stamped receipt from the IRS since it will have the complete vin number. Most people don't write the vin number on their check. But, any IRS office should be able to print out a receipt.
