Thinking about this decision from my family's experience, I think one of the most important questions before deciding whether to become a trucker is: How does your wife feel about this decision? My father was a member of the Teamsters and he and my mother took a serious look at the most stark trucking lifestyle reality - and decided trucking would work for them. They discussed the best- and worst-case scenarios of how much he'd be home. Imagining the worst and deciding if that was acceptable to them was very important, and I think it made my mother feel like a decision-maker, which made it easier to accept the hardships (which come with any job).
