I think your cost are a little high, if you could cut .20 to .30 cpm off your cost you would be better

Even if you did cut it, hauling freight for 1.50 a mile to me is a joke for a flatbed or step. I'm not even an owner operator and I think that is cheap. I don't see how people can really make a whole lot of money off of that.

They are not making money, they are making company driver wages with all the costs and headaches of being an O/O.... not worth it.

As for you Bayou, getting a box in your area might be the way to go until the herd gets thinned out of flats/steps in that area. Freight in Houston ( and texas in general) is just flat bottom rates. Every mexican has a flatbed now and will haul for anyhting offered. they just send the money back to Mexico to the family anyways and it hurts all you locals very badly. I know this because last week i was in San Antonio and spoke to several drivers at the TA, they all were originally from Mexico and that's what they said they were doing. They planned on retiring in a few years and going back.

    Good riddens I say/.....

What gets me is the brokers they know they can get loads hauled cheap so why not I pulled out of Houston for $3.92 a mile on a 300 mile run into LA thru one of my customers so I know the money in freight is there just to many hands in the candy jar!!

$1.47 a mile seems a little high on cost but it depends on what your payments and MPG are. My cost per years are running right around $1.25 a mile. Check it quarterly. Freight rates have seem to come down some but not as bad for me as others are seeing. The shiippers i deal with are still paying the same rates they have all year for the most part.

It's been over six months since I was in Texas. I'm here now and can only say it's gotten worse rate wise.
1.27 @ mile I was quoted, told them I wouldn't haul candy bars for that and that's me being able to eat some.
All I see is empty equipment riding up and down the road here.
It will be awhile before I come back.

The only area of Texas that we do well is out of Houston. The rest of Texas is a graveyard. I won't be going past Houston for a long while.
