Just wondering, not really sure what it is called but when the truck builds up air pressure and it exhausts out on the passenger side, I get a puddle of oily substance on the ground. Almost smells like hydraulic fluid or something. Is this normal? I saw somewhere else where someone said it was a sign the compressor was going out? (Cat c15 550hp)

Drain ya air tanks, replace air drier cartridge, the compressors on the sdp cats are bad for putting oil in the air system when they get a few miles on them. I think i saw a service letter on them a while back.

    Billerd Thanks this.

I guess it would be about four years old. I just bought the truck this year and it has a new crate motor in it with 32,000 miles on it now. Truck itself has 397,000 miles.

Ok just the reason I asked was because mine when I got it was filling the air tanks with oil. Cat put a new reman Bendix compressor on and for now all seems to be well. I also remember hearing that the compressors on these engines only last a year or two and aren't made very well at all. I was lucky, however, and that the oil didn't go through my entire air system. Only had to replace rear end leveling device. You could have an output test done on it to check. And I agree with changing your air dryer cartridge yearly, I do mine about now just before the brutal cold of winter arrives.

So, should I consider it normal then? I will replace the air drier, I drain the tanks daily already.

With a properly maintained and functioning air dryer your tanks should always be dry.

    correct.:biggrin_25514:

    to Billerd:
If you are draining your airtanks daily something is seriously wrong.
You should have replaced that compressor a long time ago.
And by waiting to replace it,you will wreck all your airvalves which will cost much more then the compressor.
    That's my opinion.:biggrin_25525:
