I wanted to make some extra money while I was in school by helping people move, I planned on renting a truck from uhaul or another company to do this. I would like to know if this is legal? and do I need a mc number or anything to get started? So basicaly the question is can someone give me cash, I rent a truck and take there stuff from one house to another in state and out of state? thanks for any help!

You can do all that, but you're setting yourself up for disaster with possible legal problems & lawsuits. Why don't you do it legally with an established company like Bekins, during your summer break, to learn the ropes and then go on your own. There are already legal companies doing what you suggest, & they will underbid you. Companies such as "Two Men & A Truck", and others.

    Is it legal? No
Can you get caught? No, if everyone keeps there mouth shut.
You work for cash, which means no receipts for them to claim taxes on your work.
Also if you get pulled over for anything you're just moving a friends stuff for free. If you mention work and then that's where you'll get in trouble. Thing is, if you have a wreck and all their belongings get destroyed, who's responsible? That's when you need a contract stating you're not, but then again you're already hiding a business so you don't want a paper trail...

You will have to trust strangers to stay quiet, that doesn't work in this world. My plumber used to give discounts if you paid him with cash and no paperwork, if you would like to ask him a question on how well it worked he can be reached at:

Not legal, but who will tell ? But one thing to consider, do you know how to handle furniture ? There is an art form to it and how will you drum up business ?

Thanks for the input, Ive helped friends move furniture for a case of beer before but I guess I dont know the art of it. I am a former C-17 loadmaster in the Air Force, so I have tons of experiance with cargo. I'm not trying to escape paying taxes and I dont mind setting up as a buisness. I just am curious since I would be using a rental truck if I would need a MC number, Log, Medical card, etc?

If it's a commercial vehicle with a dot number, I think you do. I like your idea a lot.better than these other guys just starting out. You almost need to break the rules some what to get a jumpstart in trucking
