After looking at tablets vs laptops, broke down and bought hubby a laptop as he is graduating in Dec and will head on the road in Jan. Figure that the laptop will do all the internet and game stuff the tablet would do, plus DVD drive for movies and bigger screen. The guy at Walmart said his friend bought a device to plug into the USB port to turn the laptop into a GPS. Any recommendations on which device I should purchase? Software I may need? I would like to make sure he has GPS capability even though the company he is with claims they have written directions and dispatch to help. Sometimes though when you are lost and confused my thoughts are a GPS will help 100 times more than any dispatcher - especially when you can't tell the dispatcher where you are. Recommendations appreciated.
Device to turn laptop into GPS?

I use CoPilot. It has a GPS sensor and has worked great for me. Had it for about 2 years now.

copilot is a software program. doesn't come with the gps sensor. it's used for smartphones. and tablets that have gps modules built in. and they do have a truckers unit called pcmiler. cheapest handheld unit you can buy. it's also very cheap for the phone or tablet.
a lot of truckers are cheap and buy the microsoft streets and trips or the delorme. WITH the gps module included. but those aren't trucker specific software. they do the job but you better be on your toes for streets with signs he may turn on that don't allow trucks.
your best bet. would be to buy a android phone. it's comes with google maps and google navigation. you can buy the copilot software very cheap. it doesn't require internet. it's full fledged maps download right into the phone. but he will have addresses that he won't be able to find. thats where google maps comes in handy. it can find most businesses and will guide him. so basically he'll have 2 gps's in one device.
it's always a good idea to have some type of backup but nothing can find EVERYTHING. or route him properly in some instances. -
I have CoPilot Live Version 8 on my laptop and I have a GPS sensor that plugs into my USB port and they work in conjunction.

That is the new version. V9Dieselboss Thanks this. -
yes, it works in conjuction with a gps receiver. but your above post says it has a gps sensor. and that is false. IT DOES NOT HAVE a gps sensor. you have to buy a sensor to work with it.
it's $100 for the laptop software. plus the cost of a gps receiver.
it's $4 for the phone or tablet and they already have a gps built in feature.
don't know how much the handheld unit runs these days. i paid $150 for mine 18 months ago from the truckstop. brand spanking new. -
Being a fisherman he is familiar with Co-Pilot, milskired - what is the name on the GPS sensor you have for your USB port? Yes I am also looking at upgrading his phone also to an android once we use down the minutes on his pay per phone, but the bigger screen to see all the detail on the laptop is handy since he isn't a young guy and keeps having to take off his glasses for nearsite work - big screen is easier for him. Plus one other thing I was thinking is he may be stuck on his phone trying to talk to someone if in a major lost or detoured snafu, and being able to have the laptop up to see the GPS where he is at/where to go around would be handy while talking to someone. Just trying to cover all the challenges - keep the recommendations coming - Thanks!

Beware though that the state mileage breakdown is not in Version 9. So if you use the state-by-state mileage breakdown to help with IFTA and such then stay with version 8. -
look at Garmin GPS sensor you can plug into a laptop.
