My choice is wait til school starts and do it...prolonging this another 4 months - or go with a company now and get trained - having a commitment on the back end. I need the experience either way, so having a commitment in my eyes isn't such a bad thing. As you said...it's what I need/best interest. Thanks.

The other reason i decided to pay for school was when I do get hired on with a company I dont have to sit in an class for 2-4 weeks and not getting paid. but if you all ready have your ticket its much easier.

The big deal to me was not having the "commitment" to a company that I went through. Plus alot of companies have tuition reimbursment but becareful there. Some have a long waiting period till that kicks in but will pay up to x amount of dollars.

I don't have a ticket actually. I just started researching this. I am not well off...but the lack of money for 3 months shouldn't be an issue.

The commitment I am only OK with...because hoping out of bed with one into another is bad on a resume anyway. If I have to stay a year, I can do that. If I have to pay back school...I can do that too.

I appreciate your feedback though. Looking forward to hearing about your experience throughout both.

Don't know if this would be a legit or common sense question, but if they don't provide that stuff, what is the policy on idling? You don't want to freeze to death in the winter or melt in summer because of any asinine idle policy.

I paid $4K for school. It was eagle truck school through Harper college in Northern Illinois. It turns out is was just the basics to get the plastic CDL card. But it did get me that card.

After school I went with KLLM. They paid the most monthly for tuition reimbursement and a final payout (up to $4K if I remember correctly) at the end of only one year! Though the govmt took half that final payout. Can't blame the company for that...

But tuition payback is only good if you are also earning a decent wage. At KLLM some drivers would bank decent pay even after paying their truck lease rates while some were in the red, for weeks and months at a time! I have no idea why that is...

For me, as a company, non lease, driver I have been very happy with what the company has provided to me. From a beginner regional driver, then moving to a dedicated route then to intermodal rail support.

Maverick88, I have been leaning towards this route myself for the same reasons. I would rather not be tied to a particular company.

Yep. For me after weighing the pros/cons going to a school and paying for it on my own came out ahead. I have certain goals and this was the best choice to achieve them.

Just take what they say with a grain of salt. They are salesman and get paid as long as they can talk you into showing up for that first day. They are going to tell you whatever you want to hear.

Take the time to do your home work. Decide what is important to you and find a company that is going to best suit your needs. If home time is a concern find another job.

Home time really is'nt much of an issue. I do have a 7 y/o but in order to get a better job I know I am going to have to pay my dues for at least the first year.
