I'm just wanting to know if you usually have a load attached on your days off or it's just the truck? I live in apartments so I can't park it here either way, but if it was just bobtail then I should be able to find a place to park easily enough. I'm going to be driving for a large company and just wanted to know if you often or if you ever have a trailer attached on your off days.

    Thanks

Depends on the company and your location. Many carriers have found it is better to get them home while under a load. This keeps the driver motivated (out of necessity) to make the delivery appointment and not "get lazy" and want to stay home a few extra days which some are prone to do if there is no delivery to be concerned with.

But a lot depends on your location. If you are near a major metro area, it's possible to often get loads into the city, unload, then go home but if your home is on a major travel route in between or away from large cities, you can mostly expect to get home while loaded.

    Arx Thanks this.

Yeah, depends where you live, if you're heading home under a load and then on to deliver it after your day off, or sometimes you unload 5 mi from the house (rarely) or sometimes drivers live 5 mi from the terminal and leave truck/trailer there. Be prepared for times that you are going with-in 40 miles of the house under a load and don't have time to swing by for the night. It does happen.

Yeah that makes sense. That's money sitting there waiting for you to make it, quite the motivation. There is an old bowling alley down the road from me that's been closed for years. Ever since I decided to take up trucking I've noticed semis parking there for a couple days at a time. I think I'll probably park there or at one of the Wal-Marts in town.

well, i stayed out weeks at a time and took several days off, rather than only 1 or 2 days off. if that is ur inclination as well, i can tell you that almost always deliver and go home empty, but nearly always you will have an empty trailer attached. if you, like me, are far from the nearest terminal and need to have a place near home to park, before signing on with a company you should find out what their expectations are as far as where you are ALLOWED to park. if they require a "secure location", the closed bowling alley or walmart may not be acceptable. for awhile i actually had to pay someone for parking to meet my company's requirements. other companies i worked for allowed parking at local truck stop. some have locking mechanisms of some sort to prevent theft, others do not.

yeah usually 2 weeks out 2 days off ! :) Not! but you will get it off just don't expect it often. I have been 25 miles from home and had to have Easter dinner in a dirt lot next to Wal Mart DC ! so you will close and not get home. it just is what it is. as one said find out ahead of time ! also try locating a secure place for truck and trailer most big trainer companies won't let you bob tail much. some companies will let you rent a spot from them in their yard if you ask.
