Greetings
My wife is from England, she has he greencard and lives here with me now since October. We are thinking about her going through school to train and then we would run team. Does any one know if there are any restrictions on this? She has not really driven much here and wonder what every one thinks, opinion wise or law wise?
Thanks
teaming with my english wife

My sister in law visits from England once or twice a year, and has no problem driving a car here.

I'd begin with checking your state requirements. i.e. do you need to have a regular auto license before you can obtain a CDL? If so, I'm not sure what's involved in getting one with a green card but it would also seem she's need to obtain an I-9 before proceeding too far.

My wife came to USA from China on a K-1 Visa (fiancee visa), then green card after marriage. We were told, she could not work without an exemption, even after we married in USA. She could legally get a drivers liscense and did. She did not apply for CDL. You will probably have to take her back to the dept. that processed her green card for the work permit. Shouldn't be any problem at all. My wife rode with me in the truck throughout the USA, but I didn't cross the Canadian border, afraid I might run into some unforseen problem, with her American Green Card & Chinese passport.

My wife is from England as well, and she has been here 2 years. She is now fairly comfortable with all the roads and freeways, but she is used to driving an suv. There is not a chance that she would be comfortable (nor would I) driving my rig. Figuring out how to shift properly is hard when your brand new to trucking, and god forbid you have a 13 or 18 speed.
When you said October, do you mean last month or a year ago? If it was last month, unless she drove a rig in the UK (which, BTW, they are all cabovers there, so if you have a nose its a big change), I would not recommend it.
As far as legally being able... I know my wife has a green card and it is still in the 2 year temporary phase. After 2 years, when the government sees that it is a proper marriage, she then has the ability to find employment in the US. You will need to find out from your company whether they hire teams where one of the drivers has no experience.zmpart Thanks this. -
If she has green card she can do whatever she wants. She can get driver license,CDL,and even go to Canada(she would need her UK passport along with green card).

Thanks every one:
Stexan we live in Collin county north of Dallas, do you know what Texas requirements are? Also i thought the I9 was an employers requirement, do you have any more info about this? I will google it.
Chinatown, we got my wife here visa on IR/CR1 which is greencard upon entry with full working rights. Your visa K1 was different in that you have apply for adjustment of status after your wife has come and got married, so your wife cant get working rights until the adjustment has been processed. I am sure my wife can get a job and could have got one the day she received her SSN number, which we already have. You definetly should not cross the border until your adjustment has been processed because a K1 is a single entry visa and your process will be canceled and you will have to start all over if she leaves. Great site that helped me a lot, you may know it already, but if not check it out visajourney.com
Peak, i was also wondering how she would handle shifting with the wrong hand, guess we'll see. Also if your wife has an actual green card I551, then she can work, no two year restriction. the two year restriction is on the green card itself, after which she will be able to get a ten year green card and citizenship. As far as working on a green card it is no problem, she just needs a SSN. You should check out the site i mentioned also if you are confused about her rights. She has a lot of them if she has a green card, one of them definetly being working rights.
Mladen86....thanks this is what i had thought, i just wasnt sure if there was a federal restriction on having to have a normal passengers vehicle license for a certain amount of time before being allowed to obtain a CDL, do you know?
Thanks for the comments everyone!
Be wellChinatown Thanks this. -
I don't think there is any time restriction.I got my CDL 3 months after regular license.I think best thing for her is to get CDL permit. She needs to pass tests(general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicle),then she will be allowed to drive up to 4 hours per day, with somebody in the team of course
zmpart Thanks this. -
Thanks for this information then. We are getting all documents together for her to get her regular license.

Yeah, regular license on Monday, then CDL permit on Tuesday. Your Green card notes right on it if allowed to work here.
zmpart Thanks this.
