Can anyone give some advice on the best way to haul horse carriages across country? Yes these are metal frame with leaf spring suspension horse carriages. They have tie down points on the axles so van or flatbed is an option. Just a bulky item and wanted some O/O experience in hauling an odd item. We deal with about 160 per year - just looking for some advice.

Since they aren;t that heavy, I would think that you would be best off to use straps from the axles to the tiedown points. As long as the axles are strong enough to use, that should be a good way to secure them. My impression of them has always been that the springs between the body and the axle are pretty soft, so make sure that the body of the carriage cannot rock too far over and smack the sides of a van, doing damage to the carriagework and other wood work areas. Kind of an oddball load, so there probably aren't a lot of people with experience at hauling them.

For awhile I was hauling electric 4x4 buggies. Basicly golf carts with 4x4 and racks front and rear. they were just wide enough that we could haul them two wide in a plate van (plate van is slightly wider inside than a regular van) I had wheel choks that I nailed in around the wheels and then used ratchet straps in Z track along the sides of the trailer to hold them down a little with moving blankets under the straps.
