I'm curious as to what everyones thoughts on body & paint repair needs are. Are there any reputable shops in the Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin areas that people would recomend? I'm also curious to what restrictions or guidlines that insurance or leasing companies may have towards body & paint repairs? Are they going to make us go to a facility of their choice or do we have say in that? Do any truck stops in the midwest provide paint & body needs for anyone?

I'm actually a painter by trade & have worked most recently at a MAACO that has the ability to spray trucks, but also for others on a need basis. My interest is that I really like the production concept & was curious to hear from other truckers what some of their experiences have been when in need of repairs. I would like to see if their is a niche in the trucking world that I could cater to. Possibly even piggy back off of mechanical facilities. I guess I'm just following a dream, & doing my research to see if there is any future in it.

Had a truck that got backed into in Walcott, IA. Got it towed to the peterbilt dealer over in Davenport. Made it a point with the insurance company that it was just going to be repaired enough there to get it down to St. Louis to get all the work done so that way it was closer to home. Drove from IA missing a fender, headlight, half the bumper missing, and air cleaner smashed in. Got plenty of looks and comments about it, lol.

Did the insurance company steer you to a facility in IA or where you home was? or did you have control of selecting the repair facility of your choice? Do you independantly own your truck, or do you lease? What would be you opinion on how to contact truckers or companies if I was to decide to pursue this opportunity?

The Gary, IN area would be a good place im sure to set up. Plenty of truck stops around there.

A service that would probably work for you is sand blasting and painting truck frames over a weekend for truckers. I know that in my area, Chattanooga, TN, I don't know of any independent shops that paint trucks.

its a great idea, there are many ideas i have had regarding trucking (from water blasting salt off for $20), cleaning snow from trailer roofs, and even your idea, a "mobile" body shop

go for it, the world is your oyster

with all of the dented trucks i see on the road, and many of them are not the mega-carriers, but small outfits that either cant afford major complete repairs, or cant stop to get the repairs done, they would love for someone to come to their shop and take care of the major stuff (bumpers hanging off, fairings dangling in the wind, etc)

Think what he's looking for is "does insurance company force one to use one body shop over another" Answer in my case, no. Had a car come into my truck a couple of years ago messing up the hood, both fenders, and both steps. They smacked the right side trying to merge into my truck from the right lane and rolled around the front as I jammed the brakes at 70mph until they smacked the otherside facing the opposite direction and ended up against a concrete median divider.. Lucky no one was hurt or killed talk about pucker factor happened in slow mo I just knew someone was going to die.. anyway, . They only wanted one estimate from the shop of my choice, this was Great West, good insurance took care of everything very little hassel I chose KW in Nashville but did get another estimate elsewhere so I knew they were at least honest. They did a lousy job and my truck was down 3 weeks.

I appreciate the support. One question I would pose to all of you who have responded or will respond later is.... Since you all drive trucks where would you take you rig? And why? Would it be an independent, a facility that is large and deals with a specific brand, would it be somewhere close to home or somewhere on your route? Price, quality, turnaround time? In a hypothetical world, what would cause you to select a place to be your body repair facility?

Quality rates high to me. Price needs to be competitive but if I need body work done a shop with a reputation for turning out quality work would get my business even if it cost more, within reason. I tend to think most would go with price regardless of anything else cause lots out there on tight budgets. Not that I am rich with unlimited funds just personally I'll pick quality every time. Quick turnaround is good but if it takes a while it just does, if it's a good job no big deal imo. Reputation among other owners who had done business with a shop would sway my choice. Around here the old Nashville Peterbilt used to have a body shop with a great reputation. The new Rush Peterbilt there now who knows.
