Man I got a serious question. How does one improve their safety rating? I am an o/o. I had a company tell me today that my safety rating was at 51%. I was like what does that have to do with booking the load. They were like we have to run this by our safety department because you have to have atleast 45% to book the load. I was like what is it to run by the safety department either your going to give me the load or not. I was like you just said its 51% and needs to be 45% isnt the safety department gonna tell you the same thing you already said. I was like what is that I would be hauling. She was like brake shoes. I was like cool becuase I have only had two dot inpsections on the truck and was put out of service for a cracked brake shoe so if it happens again on this load I will have the part with me. Needless to say she never called me back.
What puzzles me is how I got 20 inpsections on the driver no out of service, but got 2 inspections on the truck got one out of service for a cracked brake shoe that was questionable on the size of the crack, but the officer was like I am going to put you out of service because if you go down the road and kill someone and they come back and see that I let you go like this I will lose my job. I didn't agree with the out of service but I did understand. And I'm at 51% when I only have 1 truck.
Its crazy how I am being penalized for being a small company. I feel that once the violation was corrected that the scale house should have re doted my truck and that would have gave me 3 inspections with one out of service. I did ask but he was like the dont do that just turn the paper work in that says you have corrected the violations. By the way I did not get a fine and I am sure he could have given me one.
Im just not sure how to improve my safety rating without pulling on the scale asking to be doted. But we all know that they will find a reason to put you out of service if they want to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

In your situation, there is only two ways to improve it:
1st and harder one: get more trucks and that will lower percentage, once (which usually takes loooong time) they have your profile updated
2nd: stop at scale(when you have time, which is just about impossible) and ask for an inspection (be sure you are good on logs and truck before you do this)
As you can see, just as with credit score, there is no way to improve safety score quickly...
As for me, i run out of Chicago and see way too many trucks that do not belong on the road, by just being able to avoid inspections. I spend lots of money in order to keep my equipment safe and up to and above the standards , while others, who don't care about nothing but cash just go on until they kill someone...

cdub304 Thanks this. -
Like AM77 said above, you can't really do anything to improve it immediately. Yes, you can try to get some good ones but that can go either way and they don't really seem to help that much anyway. Just stay clean until the violations get 6 months old. At 6 months, the time severity multiplier goes from 3 to 2. In other words, 36 points becomes 24. That may help.
It's grasping at straws, but you always challenge the brake shoe violation through their Data Q appeal process if you disagree. Good luck with that though. -
Do accurate pre-trips and post-trips. Inspect what you expect. Don't cut corners, don't fudge logs, and don't act like it's not your fault when you get a bad score on your card from a Level 1 or 2 when it's something that could have been found on your pre/post trip.

What pisses me off is when you have a good inspection it dont show up like it never happen I had a truck inspected 3 times last month he didnt have any problems on two but one they got him for a light and log book guess what report showed up and what two didnt total BS

same thing here, got pulled in on north 45 south of Dallas. no violations found, thats been over 3 months ago still not on my profile. had another last year no violations never has shown on csa, only the bad ones show up and no with cargo securment related violations being placed with maintenance, it is only going to get worse. all this csa crap is, is a way to weed out the little man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should submit a Data Q challenge to get credit for those good inspections.
-
If you have the inspection certificates, by all means submit a Data Q. That is an easy win.
NY has a little trick where they make you do a drive by. They stop you and they check for tires, air leaks, lights, weight etc and let you drive on if everything looks good. You don`t get credit for passing this ìnspection but if they see something they don;t like they pull you over and do the full monty and you can bet you will get credit for that.Last edited: Dec 7, 2012

How do you go about doing that?
-
Log into the CSA portal and there should be a clickable link on there somewhere that says "sumbit a data q" or something to that effect. Click on that and follow the instructions. I submitted one of these challenges ~5 years ago under the old safersys system and I won.
One of our drivers allegedly knocked down a telephone pole and left the scene. Driver says he rubbed it but it didn't fall. But I digress. The safersys website had this incident listed as a fatality, and it wasn't. I said as much in the in the data q. Safersys communicated to me (via the e-mail within the safersys portal) that the burden of proof was on me. Since the driver left the scene there was no police report so I contacted my insurance company and got a copy. From there I got the officer's name and detachment. I called the detachment and he was good enough to fax me a copy of the police report showing no fatalities and no injuries. I sent this report to safersys and they deleted the fatality from the record.
If you have inspection records it should be an easy win for you.
