I read an article about the lack of basic safety intergration in a rig's cab to protect the drivers. I am a wannabe and safety is really significant to me as I have my family that I need to be here for to support. Who has been in accidents in their rig and please explain the extent of your injuries, description of the accident, and the damage caused to the cab.

WOW you are way over thinking this whole driving thing !!! You will safer in your truck than you will be in your POV .

In most cases you aren't even going to realize you were an in accident! You may here a small noise but you surely aren't going to feel a thing. Unless of course you hit another big truck or a train! The only other exception is if you rollover, so don't do that!
I personally have had a few non-preventables and though the damage to other vehicles was quite substantial I never felt a thing. One of them I actually had to be flagged down before I knew what happened and the car was totaled!
This is why it is very important to never swerve or dodge anything! If its in your way, hit it! The only exceptions for swerving and rolling a big truck over are possibly for school buses and for sure, other big trucks! Animals, four wheelers, the Pope, etc... hit it!
If you swerve to miss something and end up rolling over you could not only possibly kill yourself but you could make the accident far worse! Once that truck rolls you have absolutely no control over what is going to happen. Do what you can do to SAFELY try to miss something but never jerk the wheel or make an aggressive move that is going to cause you to rollover.amiller and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -
I agree with chompi. It's like drivers training for your class d license the instructor told everyone do not swerve for dogs cats squarrils turkeys. You are better off hitting it dead on then sweaving and Hiting a tree another car etc.

90% of the accidents happen at the fuel island or in the parking lot. Those only hurt your pride and that week's pay since you now lose part of the day dealing with it (sometimes all day). Do it a lot and you won't have to worry about trucking anymore... If you want safe, drive the Correct speed for conditions, pay attention, and don't run into anything bigger than you. Good luck!

Work for a company that has Volvo tractors. Recent models "07 and newer have steering wheel air bags. And if you do some Googling you can find numerous crash related videos to see how well their steel cabs hold up in wrecks. They are one of the few rigs tested for crash worthiness.

Look if you are this concerned and you haven't even been in a truck yet ! you need to stop and rethink your choice here. Driving is a way of life its not a job or even an adventure. You are responsible for your own safety just like in a car or pickup and if you were to see the statistics then you would never drive again. I'm not trying to bash you =, I just don't wanna see another newbie get burned by some recruiter talking them into this. it's expensive to get started and I don't mean money wise, you are away from family for weeks or even months and yes things will happen especially at home and your family will have to deal with it without you. seriously think this over real hard.

I appreciate everyone's honesty. I have been in rigs and I'm going into trucking for stable income for my family in this terrible economy. I respect everyone's opinions but after reading that article which was sent to me via this forum, I wanted to hear stories from truckers that can relate to the story and not those that cannot
