Hey folks! I'm in my second week at a trucking school and we're supposed to be driving on Monday. On Friday we did backing up straight and pulling forward exercise. I had a bit of trouble keeping the trailer straight. The instructor I had didn't seem very helpful but I asked another instructor if there would be more practice on Monday and he said yes, but I want to make sure I can perfect this so when it comes to exam time, I don't mess this up!
I was told if I see a problem in the mirror to turn toward that way to correct it but I ended up going over the line or hitting a cone. Of course the trucks were POS LOL!

Make slight adjustments. Dont over react.
pharrari Thanks this. -
What he said^.....I learned to stay in control, and not over steer.A inch in the front is a foot in the rear.

go to the store today and buy a toy semi. Push it around the table.
Then think of what way you have to turn the steering wheel to make it happen.HuskerJim, Marksteven and pharrari Thank this. -
Very very small movements with the steering wheel. Dont panic when you see the trailer going a bit off course, just slowly bring er back. I just got done with school myself & guess I may have too much common sense. I just didnt move the wheel & passed. Another guy who started before me is still in school, because when he straight backs, he almost jacknives the trailer every time.
pharrari Thanks this. -
is straight backing a 53' easier than a short one?? 28 is it?
-
a longer trailer will not react as fast as a smaller one.
But when it does, you will need more area to recover. -
Just keep practicing and don't over correct. If you can look in your mirrors and focus on a distant point that you want to get to it might help.
-
Like others have said, small corrections are best. I just graduated from school and all of our range trucks were total POS. And I always got stuck pretripping and setting up the Volvo which is the worst of the bunch! x____x

If the if the trailer is aligned with the tractor's orientation, and the tractor is backing in a straight line, you will "back in a straight line", however if the tractor is backing in the slightest of circular pattern, the trailer will want to to the same thing, except in the opposite direction and you WILL NOT back in a straight line. the key is to get it straight, then keep it straight.
Search youtube. there are a number of videos, some better than others. here is one. But if you're having trouble with straight line backing, the other backing maneuvers are going to be a real problem for you.
