ACK! Bridge strike in Denver! Anybody close enough to help?!?!

    New York is funny that way. Some say it is to allow for snow pack, but what I have found is they measure to the center of the axle above the ground, and 13-6 is about equal to 12-2 in New York, I checked with a tape and that is what I came up with.

    One of my company's other drivers tried to get to a place in Chicago on S Canal just south of 18th, the thing is, there is a low clearance a little ways north of 18th and he ended up backing a couple of blocks when he realized it wouldn't clear.

    I ended up going back out to the Kennedy to the Ryan and down to 18th, and went right to the place with no problems, there is no shortcut for a 13-6 north of 18th on Canal. I saw the sign for low clearance after a right turn before turning right an Canal, so I didn't have to back up.

    Yup. It did cost the owner. Driver got a reckless driving summons too. Aside from the cost of the trailer, new tires, etc., my CSA score will probably be in the toilet by January because of it. The way brokers are checking it these days, if they won't give us loads, we could be done because of it.

    Maybe so but you don't think the owner is going to let this driver get away with not paying do you?That's not how companies work.

    Pattyj, in case you haven't noticed, a company can go after a driver all they want but other than any settlements due, it's like getting blood out of a turnip.

    Not to mention what will happen to your insurance. Your company may be done and all your other drivers may be out of a job and someone is talking about what it will cost the driver........I wouldn't really care what it costs the driver that hit the bridge.

    ####. Sorry to hear that, tomkatrose....but what can you do? You try to hire qualified drivers, you try to run a decent company, and ONE single idiot brings it all down!

    Wish I could provide some solutions....but I simply don't know what to do, short of dumping your drivers and going to a single truck operation with yourself as the driver. That way, at least, you only have yourself to blame when something like this happens (not that something like this should ever happen!)
