I live in TN and a shipper is requiring me to have workmanship comp! I am a one truck operation they also want me to have a SCAC CODE! Which I had at one time but a website says its like $265.00 to reinstate it !! Seems in this buiseness every number or four letter word cost money! But I never see any benefits from it!!
Does any one have any info on the workmans comp .

Any reputable insurance broker who sells trucking cargo/collision/liability ought to also sell workers comp ins or could direct you to someone who does.

The Workers Comp requirement is typically negotiable once you explain you are a one truck operation and you cannot sue yourself for injuries or let them know you are exempt as a business owner. As I recall the SCAC code was $65. It may have gone up but that is what I paid last year.

You should be able to get an occupational accident policy for less and it does pretty much the same thing as workers comp. OOIDA has a policy for about $150/month. Tennessee doesn't require a workers comp on the owner of the business.
You may be able to reapply for a new SCAC code and not have to pay for the time you let yours go until now. I don't see a valid reason to require a scac code. We have mc number, dot number, fein, and SIC code. I don't see why we should need another code when we already have so many that can identify our company. If not, then you will need to pay whatever they ask to get your code reinstated.FREEBRD Thanks this. -

Different states, different requirements. Ca., yes. Az., no. Apparently Tn. yes. When I worked selling cars, most of the dealers required the vendors (washers, detailers, anyone who came on the lot to work) to have workman's comp and prove it. There-by eliminating any threat of law suits if injured on their property.

What he says about Occ Acc policy from OOIDA (I got mine!).
My agent can sell me a WC policy for some minimum amount ($400, maybe more - can't recall?) that will cover employees but not the owner...
Yes, you got it right that you pay $400 or maybe a lot more to have a WORTHLESS piece of paper to satisfy someone anal requirements to cover their end of things!
I haul for 3 large corp-type shippers who have accepted this.Last edited: Dec 12, 2012
