Hey guys i have a 97 model international 4900 with a DT466, the problem started a few months it would run for 30 minutes or so and as long as we left it idling when we were unloading it would be fine but if shut off it wouldn't restart for a while, we replaced the crank sensor and it ran fine for about 2 days. Now we start it up and it runs for about 10 seconds and it'll start running really rough and if you dont hold the throttle flat on the floor it will die. I have replaced all fuel lines from tank up to filter, tested fuel pressure, and tested tested oil pressure out of high pressure oil pump. My thinking is the last thing that is left is the ECM but just wanted to see if any of ya'll had any other ideas. Thanks for all the help

Sounds like injector control pressure solenoid issue. Have you changed the engine oil recently?

we changed the oil and filter and fuel filters about 200 miles ago. i forgot to mention, usually the passenger side tank is the one that gets low on fuel first but this last time it was the drivers side tank and the boys ran it out of fuel, we primed everything back up and it ran for about a day then started all this. When you start it and it runs for about 10 seconds, if you unscrew the fuel filter a big purge of air comes out of the filter everytime. Thats why i replaced fuel lines and i have tried a new injector control pressure soleniod

Did you remove (unscrew) the little plastic fuel inlet bowel and clean it out and the screen?

When the engine is starving for fuel air will be returned to the fuel filter, this could explain the air/pressure release when removing the filter.

yes we cleaned the the screen filter and it was pretty nasty the first time and we've removed it 3 or 4 times after to see if it was still picking up trash but none more since

At this point, I would pull all the injectors, take them to injection shop for testing. Although they have an injector test that you can run with the injectors installed, the test isn't highly valued as it will pass a bad injector, so bypass this test and pull them for testing.

do you feel in anyway that it could be the ECM, only reason i ask i had a guy tell me to check the high pressure pump and fuel pressure coming out of the filter housing and if they were ok then its probably the ECM. i'm not arguing your opion by no means i'm just looking checking all possibilities

Don't worry, I don't blame you one bit, but 99% of the time it's the injectors. You could narrow it down further by testing or go ahead and pull the injectors for testing which is what I'd do in this case.

Have you hooked up to ECM and checked trouble codes?

we put a snap on scanner on it and the only thing on there is brake switch and controller #1, and i was told that is a ECM fault. Thats the only reason i was asking about the ECM. But i will check into the injectors. Thanks for all your help

    bender Thanks this.
