Currently in the pre-hire process with Roehl. I recently received my CDL from an independent school and of course obtained my DOT medical card (new certification) which I have in my possession.

Roehl requires another DOT physical for employment. The doctor completed the card as a 're-certification'. I did not receive the new card at the completion of the physical. The office staff said it would be mailed to the Roehl company. I checked with my recruiter who said this was normal and I would receive the card at orientation.

My question is: Is the current DOT card I have still valid, does the new card supercede the original card ??? Am I now hostage to Roehl for the medical card in the event I decide to go with another company.

    Thank you for your help.

Your old card is still good. the new one does not nullify the first one. It is good until the exp date on it.

You know DOT medical cards are neccesary but obtaining one seems more complex. The rules for obtaining one change every year with new rules signed into law.Funny thing is,the stress or workload from driving will probably will kill you before your card even expires. When you hire on to a new company most require to see a valid , up to date card. However, some companies require a new visit to their doctor on hire.My worry is that your medical info now becomes company info.Employers are not entitled to your private medical info.If you passed the physical, they receive a copy of the card and you retain the original copy to present to law enforcement if need be.Any medical condition that can be treated by a MD,it may however not disqualify you from receiving a standard 2 year card while undergoing treatment but it may state 1 year,6 mos, 3 mos, recertification time depending on the condition. There are some conditions that will disqualify you from driving.Go to FMCSA.gov.I think I got that right, if not do a search,it spells out in detail what's required to pass a physical and any new rules regarding qualifications based on health issues.Driving a rig seems easy compared to the rules and regs.Enjoy trucking, not every can.
