Actually in Colorado as long as you have Flashing Lights you can run 24/7 up to 12 wide. Also Up to 14 Feet is allowed with an escort car and over 14 is only allowed if authorized by a Chapter 6 special permit. This comes directly out of the rules and regulations book that colorado issues with annual oversize and overweight permits.Big Duker Thanks this.

Exactly he was waiting on daylight for the scales but in the pictures looks like he was blocking the right lane with that dump, legally shouldn't have been there so I'm sure they'll get sued. But how does the guy that hit them not see the pilot car, I'm sure he had warning lights on the car. Who know maybe the guy saw the car but didn't see the side of the dump on the trailer cause it was dark and freaked and got the car to.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this.

Well on the 11' wide I pulled the permit stated no overwidth loads after dark. -
plain as day you can see the load sticking out in the travel lane. Its the os loads fault. At night you wouldn't even see that dump bed hainging off the sides.

I am an oversize load Pilot. I would like to comment on the accident.
First of all, no one has all the information to speculate what happened and who's to blame.
1. I will say that the oversize load should not have been on the side of the road at that time of the morning in the state of colorado or any other state. Although I have done night moves with hiway patrol escort at night in another state. The news does not mention hiway patrol escort or why the load was parked there except to mention they could not go through the port.
2. They should have had hiway patrol escorts and pilots as per colorado law.
3. All amber lights, flares, and cones, etc should have been in place which we do not know though news reports if any were used. The oversize load and truck should have had all ambers on also.
4. The truck that hit them should have been able to see what ahead of him. A good driver always looks far ahead. I find it very hard to believe none of the cones, flashing ambers, etc. were not used. Pilot escorts who are on the road at that time of the morning if not on the permit should be fined big time!!! It is our responsibility to know times of travel for our load being escorted, This is not to say that hiway patrol can superseed this. Thanks for listeningJagd Thanks this. -
**BUMP** Three pages of idiots on this thread. Everybody's an expert.

First off if your stuck or waiting for police escorts your sitting on the side of the road( local roads) i dont believe the media doesnt have there facts right loads of that size you can travel at night depends on your restrictions of your permits. Ive gotten stuck sitting due to blown tires break downs and waiting for local police to get us off the ramps and bring us through towns before. Colarado has brought me through Denver before in the middle of the night. but i did have police escortsLast edited: Dec 15, 2012
