Hi there,
My name is Benjamin I'm going to be 20 at the end of november. Right now I'm still living in France. I've been thinking of being a trucker here for a long time but I don't really like where the industry is actually going. So that's the reason why I decided to live in Canada to make my dream come true. Departure is scheduled january 10th 2013. I plan to settle in Winnipeg, MB because I heard that there are many jobs there.
My dream would be to do long haul to the USA. But as I won't be 21 when I get my class 1, I would like to find a job local as a dump truck driver or something like that to get a little bit of exp before going OTR. By the way for those of you that are living in Manitoba, do you know companies that hire young driver ?
Thank you !
A young frenchy in Canada

You will have to sign on with the bigger companies like Schneider, JB Hunt, CR ENgland to name a few. Those are US based companies that will give you the training you need before finding a respectable company to work for. There may be a canadian company that hires newbies i just do not know any canadian outfits in general.
I say respectable company because these larger fleets are gonna take you for all your worth. Cheap pay, no miles, layovers, garbage loads, the whole 9 yards. You basically give up a year of your life to get the experience you need to work for a smaller outfit. The reason you have to do this is the big companies are self insured where the respectable small companies are not and 0 insurance companies will touch you. -
try Werner in Omaha, NE that would be my first choice

The same thing is happening in Canada. Tens of thousands of Temporary Foreign Workers are being brought into Canada to replace Canadian truck drivers to reduce truck drivers pay. There are 600,000 Canadian truck drivers no longer working as truck drivers. Many of the Temporary Foreign Workers replacing Canadian truck drivers are from the same eastern European countries that are supplying workers that are replacing truck drivers in France. You cannot escape the globalization of truck drivers pay.
Working as a low-wage slave for a "Sweatshop On Wheels" US trucking company is ridiculous. It's an insult and it's disgraceful. Don't support a sleazy system that is causing poverty and despair. -
Thanks for your reply ,but as I ain't got US Visa I can't find work there. I'm limited to Canadians companies.

Runawayscreaming I knew that lots of British driver were given temporary visas and employed by companies like H&R. But I wasn't aware of eastern European coming here to cut drivers pay ...

In Canada we dupe British truck drivers into working for sleazy trucking Canadian companies and we also bring plenty of drivers from the former Soviet Republics, Poland and so on, to work as indentured slaves under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. There are also plenty of non-drivers from places like Punjab who are new family-class Canadian citizens who are "trained" (using the term loosely) to drive trucks for Punjabi-speaking Canadian trucking company owners who treat the new immigrants as slaves (and pay accordingly). Compared to France, there is very little regulation of trucking in Canada. In the next few months the average turnover of truck drivers in North America will exceed the average turnover of McDonalds employees.

I knew a work-visa driver from france; he really hated being trapped, and spoke of how much better off trucking was in europe (he left for very firm personal reasons). You display a fine bravery and spirit- don t enslave yourself to a work visa- you certainly have a greater future than spending it in the cab of a truck- a space smaller than a legal prison cell. never sell liberty

Well actually I already got my permanent resident visa, so I'll be able to choose who I want to work for.
