looking to get a money figure on a overhaul/inframe on a 3406E cat im getting ready to buy.
CAT shop is close for the weekend, and i don't want to use a "scab shop".
Also ill like to know how long it usually takes for them to get it done?

i would say $15,000 should be in the ball park. as for how long probably a week depending how many are in front of you. i see alot of trucks parked in front of cat dealer in PA when i drive by all week.
-
i was quoted 15 - 25 on an isx. depending on what all it needed.
i think 15 would be a safe bet for any engine. lowest cost scenario. -
Thats a pretty wide open question. Does it need accessories like alternator, radiator, air to air? If it has enough mile on it to need overhaul it probably needs most of the bolt on stuff. Im sure plenty of people will chime in and say im wrong but dropping $20K for an inframe then having 4 or 5 breakdowns with a tow bill each time will break most O/O's. If its a 500K mile engine and you just want to freshen it up thats fine but a million mile engine needs all of the bolt on stuff replaced.
If you have receipts from the previous owner showing replaced parts very recently then use your judgement but an air compressor or water pump with a million must be changed.
You can half a zz it for $15K and slowly go broke being nickeled and dime'd or spend $25K now and go truckin'.PST Thanks this. -
What bolt on stuff are you talking about?
-
Just spent 22k on mine. 4 year unlimited mile warranty from cat. Replaced front cover, all new belts, and every water hose, cooling lines and heater hoses. Took right at a week once they got it in the shop. Hope that helps ya.

Im talking about the compressor, fuel pump, radiator, air to air, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, idler/tensioner pulleys, starter motor... Do the clutch while you're there, throwout bearing.
Did you do any good rebuilding the engine if you still breakdown every week with those little bolt ons? -
You're not gonna break down everyday if you don't replace them parts...LOL. Now replacing the water pump isn't a bad idea plus with certain rebuild packages from Cat you can get a longer warranty with it.
But I wouldn't go throwing money out the window on stuff that isn't broken. But then again alot would depend on what you do with the truck, how long you've owned it, and what has already been replaced. -
Les remember good old murphy's law? lol

All to well, but I still ain't blowing money on things that I don't need. Many things can just be looked at to see if need be replaced, others can be tested.
