I recently purchased and operate my own Isuzu NPR 16' box truck for personal use in California.
I'd imagine there are some different laws than a regular car regarding such a vehicle, what are they?

For example Ive been informed I'll be fined for the following
    - Not having a cover on my batteries
    - Driving on a road with a weight limit
    - Driving in snowy areas without chains
    - Not keeping a logbook that will be checked at weight station
    - What else do I need to watch out for?

weight stations are the most concerning to me cause I don't know anything about them and I've just been driving past them, but that's illegal right? What do they check for at these stations and will possibly fine me for? How do I keep a log book and when is it necessary?

    Thankyou

Yours is a personal vehicle; you do not need a log book.
You do not have to pull into weigh stations unless a sign specifically states something other than commercial vehicles, such as RV's, pickup trucks, autos pulling trailers, etc.

The other questions, someone else may answer.

Assuming you have no signage on the vehicle, except "Not for hire", it's for personal use, NOT a delivery or rental vehicle, right ? You gotta' remember, any LEO can cite any vehicle for unsafe condition. Such as bald tires, lack of tail lites etc.

    Dear lord, you're bootlegging...

    (ahem)

you are required to have CMV insurance and cargo insurance. They will want to see proof. Road tax/IFTA, CMV inspection sticker, vehicle registration and DOT numbers on the side of the vehicle, a manifest/BOL with the weight and value of the commodity...etc...etc.

Cargo insurance? Umm, nope. Heck I have 18 wheelers and do not carry any cargo insurance, because I am hauling my own products.

I personally try to avoid all fines. I don't really have a "favorite", and try not to discriminate.
