I appreciate everyone's advice/opinions that have replied so far. I do have a daughter that is 3; however, I (currently) only have her on the weekends or every other weekend. . .so, that is not a real major issue. I have ignored the 1-2 year experience that some companies require and have been turned down for about half a dozen or so jobs and even been ignored on some. . .which brings me to the decision of driving OTR. My plan is to drive otr for at least a year or two and then try to find a local job. My long term goal is to eventually pull a fuel trailer or propane trailer for local deliveries. . .which, I know this takes time to get into and is a lot of responsibility and I will gladly accept that. One thing that really concerns me is the state of the economy; however, that can affect anyone's job no matter who they are and what they do. Again, I thank all of you that have replied.

I drove a dump trk then a belly dump before I got into OTR.Iknow exactly what you're saying jsmith.If OTR is what you truely wanna do then I say no time like the present.OTR isn't for everybody but if you don't mind being out for a month and your family does'nt mind then try it.This type of carreer change is'nt for everybody so what I would do is give your employer a 2 weeks notice then maybe you'll have a job to come back to incase OTR does'nt work out.

Schneider and FFE have tanker divisions. Those would be a good start for tanker experience.

I also currently work for a county road depatment as a operator . I know about all about the bs.I have not had pay raise in 6 years allready ben told none in future.I have a class a and all endorsments.It cracks me up when people say you got it made working for goverment it is some of the lowest paid work 25to28 thousand a year thats not a good future.I am currently working on getting out .

You might make $40k on the highway. Then again you might make $30K. Don't forget you'll be out for 30 - 60 days and the meals etc add up. And if you have one little incident they might turf you out on your ear.

You should have tried out for the oilfields. You know where the Kenworth dealership is in San Antonio? Drive in there and look at all the oilfield trucks they service there. Get the company name off the door. Go into the service shop and inquire. Guys will come in there to buy another truck for their fleet and you hear them come into the KW dealer asking about driver availability. I remember sitting in a driver's lounge and this small fleet owner was trying to talk his drivers into running over a holiday for $1500 cash. One day! Right below San Antonio, everywhere on either side of I-35, you see oilfield trucks.
One more thing, San Antonio is primo location for flatbedders.
