I have a 97 freightliner with a N14 celect plus 525hp that originally had a miss after running a few hours, so I dug into it and replaced the ecm, fuel pump, injectors, injector wiring harness, and main fuel lines I also checked the cooling plate check valves. Helped the miss alot but now I have a stutter and a loss of power "very little" but still a loss only in the higher geats 1st thru 5th I dont notice it but in 9th and 10th it happens. Now if I put it in nuteral and let it coast for a little bit it comes out of it but it soon returns also ive noticed that when it starts to do it it will puff a little smoke but only when its stuttering the only other time it smokes is between gears but I feel that is normal. Please if anyone can help it wouuld be great, thank you

Fuel demand being the highest in the top gears, I would continue looking at the fuel system including tanks, pickup tubes, filter heads etc. Sucking a bit of air into the system or a restriction could cause this problem.
Ironhauler Thanks this. -
Ok I will tomorrow I an going to check return restriction and go from there someone told me it could be a head??? Any thought on that and also I was told it could be the two censors on the intake mani.??? But thank you for the idea I will tear into it you wouldn't happen to know what the return pressure is supposed to be would you.

When you're dealing with this type of problem, never overlook the simplest things, which is usually the cause. Yes, it could be one of many things including those mentioned, but cover all the basics first that require no cash for parts, only your labor. Don't spend $2500 on parts you don't need to find out you have a crack in a fuel tank standpipe or some foreign debris in a fuel tank or a fuel filter sucking some air. As for as the return side, I would only check for excessive air being returned from the engine.
snowblind and Ironhauler Thank this. -
my boy had trouble with his doing that when running thru the rain. He took the control under the foot feed apart and sprayed it with electric contact cleaner and no more miss or stutter
bender and Ironhauler Thank this. -
Thank you ill let you know what I come up with, this is a 2025 cpl engine that was 435hp but when I changed the ecm I had it turned up to 525 could that have anythimg to do with it?

That N14 is a pretty cool engine. When we got his tractor it had an awful noise in it.Had a couple cummins shops tell us that was normal for an N14.The guy I go to said it had head gasket problems. We took the haeds off and had two blown gaskets and the tops of two liners were gone.We pulled the engine out and sent it to the machine shop did everything that needed done.Put it all back together with new cummins parts. That thing is doing a terrific job.It only has about 17000 miles on it and pulls a dropdeck trailer most of the time. last time out he got 7 mpg tank to tank and he pulled town hill mountain east out of Breezewood Pa on 70 with 48000 on in high gear. Now if he is telling the truth I am impressed.I hate to say it but my old 425 cat with a gazillion miles on it will not pull like that.
