i have a 1998 freightliner fld120 n-14 plus not a (red top) batterys are 2 years old it is 30 degrees outside, it wont start very slow crank dont think its making even one revolution, load tested all 4 batterys, they showed between 878 and 940 cold cranking amps under a load , batterys read to be 950 Cold cranking amps, and 1140 crankig amps, cables look ok some corrosion (green) but easily removed with a wire brush, yet truck will not crank over, need ideas its only getting colder, very tight on funds. how do i check the starter on the truck...... Thank you Brian S

my fld was doing the same thing. was trying to start it while it was snowing out had jumper cables on it battery box cover off and i noticed snow sizzling off one of the battery terminal connections touched it and blistered my finger cleaned everything up and put it back together and she rolled right over.

how do i test the starter ON my truck, batterys Load test good all 4, very very very slow crank its 30 outside only getting colder, SLOW CRANK NO START
-
use a multimeter and do a voltage drop at the starter and get your hands on an amp clamp

Don't forget to check voltage drop at your frame grounds, both @ battery and starter. Just went through that myself, and had to redo the starter frame ground which looked fine but was bad enough to drop enough to drag the starter.

Slow crank could be too thick of oil, too. You said it's cold and batteries use a lot more amps to crank when cold. Sometimes that cold you need to add a battery jump pack just for cranking...

sounds like starter draggin
bserious Thanks this. -
if you can get some one to turn the key while you give the starter a few whacks with a hammer, or wrench, not too hard but enough to jar it.
bserious Thanks this.
