I could be missing a regulation or two (it wouldn't be the first time), but I do not know why you could not haul HM in a passenger vehicle, with the possible exception of some poisons. Why not compressed gas? Folks haul helium cylinders, oxygen cylinders, freon, propane, etc. all the time.

Less than 1,000# table 2 HM requires no placards, class 9 does not require placards. As long is it is packaged properly, secured properly, with the required shipping papers accompanying, I do not see a prohibition on passenger vehicles.

And no one else seems to know why one can't either.

Generally that's true, but there are a couple of circumstances where less than 1000 pounds of a table 2 item does require placards. Even so (Placards required or not) I don't think that would make a difference concerning hauling it in an automobile.

    Best regards

Try checking out Hazmatfreight.com. They've got a lot of relevant information for the hazmat industry drivers and shippers.

Key words... reportable quantity. Look at your MSDS for the material you are planning to transport and the FMCSR you should have in every truck by law. What you may or may not carry in the trunk of an automobile has everything to do with temperature extremes.
If you're in doubt, call the DOT - that's what they are there for.

    Bingo!! What he said ^^^^

Not to discredit any replies here. But why on earth would a business owner come to a public forum and ask such a question? How do you know your getting a truthful and accurate answer?

Best thing to do is contact your local DOT and or State Police/Highway Patrol (commercial division). Well, unless you have something to hide and feel nervous talking to them.

I think with class 9 you would be good to go. I'd check with DOT if you have any doubts.

If I was your drive I'd refuse to haul hazmat in the trunk of a car. Even 100 pounds of flammable 3 can significantly add to a fire.
