So as a lot of you know preams in amplifiers only work for ssb. Is there any kind of preamp or device that does the same thing for regular 11m radios?

Pre amps work on AM as well...Only problem is most of them just make the static louder...And most don't do anything different than what the volume control knob already does...
mike5511 Thanks this. -
Ahh ok. Ive tried turning mine on and thats exactly what it did. But ive hears ssb users say they work better on ssb. So i didnt know if there was anything that worked better on AM. When i am near home i can still barely hear some people i talk to, but its way too faint to make out what they're saying

the rec amp only amplifies the incoming signal. if you want to run the preamp, i would suggest finding a radio shop that can install what is called the "shottkey" (spelling? receive mod. that involves about 30 minutes of work to the radio. the tech changes several transistors and things to better quality diodes that filter out noise better than the factory parts.
i had my galaxy 99 done in PA several months back, and during the peak of the day, i have noticed about a 3db drop in ambient line noise on the meter. it is almost totally silent at night, other than the usual static. it cost 25 bucks and in my opinion, it is money well spent.
get that mod done and you will really see the difference when running the preamp. it can be done to virtually any radio.
above anything else, remember that a 300 dollar radio and 200 dollar amp + 3 dollar fleamarket antenna = 3 dollar radio setup. a good antenna and coax setup and a good ground for the power is crucial and the most basic thing of any radio system. -
thanks! ill talk to my guy about that! and no worries with the antenna, i think my wilson 2000 is getting the job done haha

Good mod. Had all my radios (export type) done.

makes a hell of a difference doesnt it? what kills me is that the upgraded parts cost maybe 5 bucks and yet the radio manufacturers are so cheap they cut corners that will save a penny. i want to have the radio converted to the blue numbers, but i need to get a replacement or a loaner while i have that done. i can do small things to a radio, but changing the freq counter display is beyond my expertise.
and seeing how this one is totally 100% in its original config other than a recent tuneup and alignment, there is no way im crazy enough to attempt anything like that. the meter stopped working and the meter light went out. i changed those. i also installed a talkback disconnect switch in the rear. that constant talkback drives me nuts. i set the echo where i want then i terminate the talkback
