So my trucks timing gears went to crap. bull gear teeth werent too bad but compressor gear had no teeth what so ever. i have the new gears ready to be installed but my real quiestion is what are some good procedures to take to make sure i got most of the metal shavings out. i know a good oil change will need to be done but is there anything else i can do before i go to start the thing to make sure i get most of those shavings out. there was ALOT of shavings in the timing cover alone where the gears are, tomorrow i will take the oil pan down and check how much is in there. How much damage can these small shavings do to the engine if not taking completly out???? Cause i really dont think im going be able to get all of it.any help would be gladly appreciated.

How many miles on the engine? Might be time to go ahead and inframe.
Most of the big stuff should probably still be in the front cover. Some stuff will be in the pan and the screen will prevent what does go down there that is large to not go into circulation. What is small enough to get through the screen will hopefully get stopped in the filters.
I would clean out the cover really really good. Install new timing sensors (both TRS and SRS) as well. Drop the pan and clean it out. Clean the screen and put on some extended life filters.
I am sure that the compressor or the bull gear were going out for a while and anything that got into the oil system was in there before the "big bang".

Get a few cans of brake clean and go to town on the front cover area and wipe stuff down while the front cover is off now would be the time to replace the diamond seal on the cam if it was leaking just so easy to do with it front cover off if you do the diamond seal replace the cam bolt as well, once the pan is down spray brake clean on a rag and wipe down what you can, Drop the oil pump and pick up pipes an inspect the pump for wear and also check the oil pressure regulators for wear and score marks. at this point if you want drop a main cap and check the bearing and see how it looks, look at the cylinders checking for wear and score marks. check the cam for wear and score marks pull the jakes and let the oil drain from them and wash them out and replace the o-rings and ck the solenoids and wash them out, clean out standing oil in the over head and wipe down with a rag. Yeah it went about 30thousand over a million already. thats what i was thinking of doing as well." Inframe" but i will still check the oil pan and see how much of it got in there. if there IS alot tuere what would be some good advice to take into consideration. And if theres not a whole lot of shavings in there is there a good chance it didnt circulate that bad.kindda scared of putting everything back together and messing up tje engine down the line.

The only sign i had or noticed was the day it broke down. a week ago friday. i stopped at the loves in odessa TX got out and heard a ticking or kind of a clacking noise. so i went to the mechanics next door and they actually told me it was one of the gears. told the guy i was heading to houston and he told me there was a 50/50 chance i would make it. So me like an idiot took my chances and broke down right before SA on I-10. but before friday there was nothing else that was raising any red flags.

When my bull gears went, it sounded like something loose inside..
Nursed it to Portland Freightliner.
They found the problem. The mechanic who worked on it said I was very lucky it never jumped time.
He asked if it had been slow starting, I said yes and that I lost power about 100 miles before I got in to Portland.They pulled the pan and cleaned it all up. There were fine shavings and some big pieces there. So clean the pan real good.TX skateboard Thanks this. -
