Philadelphia Cheesesteak Shop Owner Defends 'Order in English' Policy

    Saturday, December 15, 2007

PHILADELPHIA — A small sign that asked customers to order in English at a famous cheesesteak shop was never meant to be offensive, the shop's owner testified Friday at a hearing to decide whether the policy was discriminatory.
Joe Vento, the owner of Geno's Steaks, defended his policy before the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, which filed the discrimination complaint.
"This country is a melting pot, but what makes it work is the English language," Vento told the commission. "I'm not stupid. I would never put a sign out to hurt my business."
Vento posted two small signs in October 2005 at his shop in a diverse South Philadelphia neighborhood, telling customers, "This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING PLEASE 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

who wants to do business with someone you cant understand. if there not willing to learn to say cheesesteak and a coke then they shouldn't get one. if your going to live (or visit) in a country you should at least learn enough of the language to get by.

Well being from Philly and having hung out with a few of the pizza and cheese steak guys I can tell you their take on the matter.

A guy comes up to the window and orders something in some kind of broken English that you can't understand. You repeat the order back and he nods his head. You make the food and give it to him.

He looks at it and has a problem. Now he is telling you in broken English that it isn't what he ordered.

Just too much hassle to deal with them. You have enough English speaking customers.

Oh by the way. There is an exception, Italian speaking customers can be accommodated. And in increasing numbers Greek speaking customers are ok.

(Lots of Greek guys in the pizza and steak business anymore)

So the Human Relations Commission thinks you should be able to do business in any language you want. The shop owner should hire someone who knows a Baltic language and pay him to go to city hall and go into each department and start asking questions and demanding service.

Whatever happened to a free country? If i want to put a sign up at my place of business that says speak english. Then i should be able to. If someone doens't like the sign than they can go somewhere else! If English is THE LANGUAGE of the USA, then why couldn't someone post that darn sign?

So you're going to learn Japanese if you go to Japan? I don't think so!

English, however, is the second language of the world and is spoken almost everywhere where you go on vacation.

Try going to Quebec and speaking English - pffft... you'll be ignored...

Those French Canadians are a snooty bunch. I guess they are still mad that the French king left them hanging.
