I'm not complaining about not unloading the freight. I was just curious how they could charge any company to unload the freight they ordered.

I complain, because alot of times the broker fails to tell my dispatch about it. now it's late and dispatch is closed and I need a comcheck.

have to call him at home, he then drives to office,(1/2 hr). gets on computer to get me the number. real pain in the butt.

    small terminal. 8 trucks.

oh and I still don't understand how they get away with charging $200/hr either.

the reciever expects his frieght to be broke down they way they want it and it got to be the drivers job back in the day when most everything was floor loaded ---- so that was a pain unloading trucks --so drivers used to pick up guys outside the gate and give them 20 or so and take a nap -- so there used to be a lot of alkies ect. doing the lumping and they started getting hurt and of course they were not covered under workers comp so the recievers were getting sued -- rare but enough to were they wanted a say on who was on there docks and wanted it all legal to protect themselves but didnt want to hire people and pay them to do something they have been getting for free --- so thats the birth of the lumper service -- so then the charges were way to high for the drivers to pay out of pocket so the trucking companys started paying for it and of course they were back charging the shippers for it and of course the shippers just back charged the recievers --- it may be a hidden charge but its in there --- so now the reciever is paying 300 for something he thinks he is getting for free

Yep it's money that goes in a circle and ends up passed down to the consumer. It's the new corporate America and how to be a blood sucking leech. :)

It wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't places that unload for free or universal fees. Some want doctors wages for uneducated manual labor.

But from a company driver's perspective it's a good time to catch up on some sleep and accept it for what it is.

As a young driver I always wanted to unload my own freight but nobody wants to pay a driver what they pay a lumper. I've done my fair share but that crap will catch up with you when you get older. Make your money driving.

weel you see the consensus here is...since you dont pay for it why should it bother you? this is one of the major reasons its become such a staple. i agree...its quite a scam worked into the system...has been for far longer than ive been driving. the concept burns me up a bit as well. THEY ordered it, but the trucking company pays for them to take it. you are absolutely right, mac. it is completely ridiculous. but dont think for one second that your company is footing the bill...it all gets lumped into the cost of shipping. basically they are charging the shipper to pay part of their labor force, and in turn the shipper charges more to ship. and they all get to write a little more off on their corporate taxes------THATS the real reason in my opinion.

Lincolnton, NC , huh. It's been awhile, but I've delivered John Deere mowers & other products to a dealership in that town. Wow, my brain still works after all those years.

Most lumpers earn more in unloading one trailer than a truck driver will earn in a day>truck drivers are jealous.

Yes, thats Piggly Wiggly. For a few months, I had to be there every Saturday morning at 7am, with a load of milk. Pull the pallets off, take one layer off, put the lumper money $75.00, in my pocket and hit the road. The company did not care, as long as the milk was delivered. Hauled a few loads of vinegar to a grocery warehouse in Atlanta, pull one layer off each pallet, put $175.00 in my pocket, get a pallet exchange, sell the pallets at a truckstop pallet company & off to the next load. It's great if a company allows the driver to do this, but not all companies do. I doubt it's any companies policy, but some ignore it to keep the drivers happy & help reduce driver attrition and it works.

funny thing is in intermodal i cant do it myself it has to be done by a lumper as they dont want me touching product at all. other funny thing they will pay $20 to restack a complete pallet of crap on a new pallet tho i might spend almost an hour doing so but they will pay the lumper service whatever they say it is but if i ask for more the crap hits the fan.
