I have an offer from a small fleet (65 trucks) out of Fort Worth to haul sand to the fields between D/FW and Laredo. Pays 25%, benefits after 90 days, 3 weeks on / 4 days off. That's all I know.

Does this sound like a decent deal? I have 15+yrs experience in OTR and LTL, no tanker experience and no oil field experience. Does this sound like a good way to get my foot into the industry? I'm single, no kids, and want to get in so I can make some real money down the road.

I don't know about oil field but I have been paid percentage of load in tanker jobs and it's never been in my favor.
If they want to pay you % it usually means there is a lot of waiting time involved which they do not want to pay you for.

I suspect someone with your experience could hire on with Nabors or Basic Energy for $16-$17 per hour to start. Twelve to fourteen hour days and 1 or two days off per week.

Yeah that's a good deal.. These companies DO pay for waiting time when you're sitting waiting to get unloaded. At times you could sit for 24 hours or more and they pay by the hour. I was on a Frac crew at Halliburton and would always talk to these sand haulers from lots of different companies. They all seemed to love their job and they always talked about how good the money is. One particular guy I talked to is an owner op so he makes 85% of the load, and he says the most he grossed one year was 250,000. Of course that's before fuel. But that's still GREAT money and all the company drivers say their take home after expenses is atleast 1500$/week. GREAT money and a great way to get into the oilfields. I say go for it. It's something I am looking at for the near future as well.

Me99 - what are the consulting opportunities? 200000 - 300000 is a big jump up from driving salary.
