I purchased a refurbished unit directly from Rand McNally trusting on their advertisement; "qualified devices are conditioned and validated according to a set of functional and appearance standards that result in a like-new device that is sold as factory refurbished.
In the hopes of being considerate of readers of this forum I will hold back my frustration and simply say ******THIS IS NOT TRUE******.
The device I received had the following problems and it requires to be replaced.
(1) The power button is not working at all.... the unit is always on.
(2) USB cable shipped with device was not functioning properly. I had to use a different cable to get PC to acknowledge the device once plugged in.
(3) The device is not recognized as a working device when plugged in to the PC.
The only options given to me by the Customer Service Dept. were to send in the device for a replacement with another refurbished unit or a refund.
No other options or attempt to make things right were made available or offered to me. In fact when I asked to speak to a Customer Service Manager I was first told "they are in a meeting" when I insisted to speak to one... I was passed on to an individual that was rude and sounded like I was bothering him.... I requested to speak to his supervisor and was told that I would be contacted by one later in the day....
I hope to get this phone call and will update this posting if I receive a solution to this problem....
For now I would not advise anyone buying a Rand McNally Refurbished unit.... The fact that the units are inspected and are "like new" is an out-right lie!!! And when caught in a lie the company's customer service did nothing to make things right.

That's why I run a Garmin dezl 560 LMT. It's not perfect but the best in my HO.
I lost the small mount for the cradel and called Garmin and told them I left it in a truck, and they sent me a new one free of charge. -
They tried to make it right by either a refund or an RMA for an exchange. What else are you looking for?
Thanks,
MarkLast edited: Jan 4, 2013
Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
yeah, i certainly sympathize with your frustration at the bad experience with the people you spoke with on the phone. but i dont understand what option wasnt offered to you that you wanted. a brand new one?if they hadnt offered the refund...only the exchange...id understand you being upset. but you got a deal on a used one. they offered to send you a different used one, or give you your money back. that was fair. also understand you feeling they hadnt lived up to their claim...and i assume you are right on this (i didnt see the unit, but why wouldnt this be true?). but calling it a lie is a bit unfair. their quality control for refurbish dept obviously was sub-par...at least on the day they did yours. but it wasnt the fault of the $9/hour customer service employee. if you were as short with him/her as it would appear you may have been, i can understand them not wanting to leapfrog over each other to make you happy. im also impressed that a representative actually answered your post and gave you info to help you directly.
hope it all works out...and i agree with idaboy. i bought a garmin as the first truck gps id ever owned. unless someone could physically show me how theirs is vastly superior to mine, id never buy another brand. im kind of a sucker for brand loyalty when it comes to larger ticket items. might buy a new garmin, but the chances that rand mcnally will get my business is pretty darn slim. garmin is a good, dependable unit. why would i risk a different brand? -
My guess he was wanting something that worked!
I had to go through 2 new 720's before I got one that was satisfactory. -
He was not happy with the offer of a refund, nor an RMA exchange... what else is there? A free Lunch?
Thanks,
Mark -
Mark, I think like the rest of us he "expected" something that came out of the box and worked properly. What's wrong with that?
-
I expect that also. It did turn on. Now the question would be did he hold the power button down for greater than 3 seconds? If he did not then it would not turn off.
As far as not connecting. I have seen once in awhile a TND will just not connect with the supplied cable, but will connect with a 1' cable. Did he try different ports? Was it a newer laptop where they turn down the power to the USB ports and you have to reset the power settings to high?
Many unknowns here. But, in any case sometimes when you get something out of the box it just may not work. It happens everywhere.
Rand did respond and offer him the only two options he has. He want's something else besides the offer of a refund or an exchange. And this is from his first post.
"No other options or attempt to make things right were made available or offered to me."
I got a warranty on my laptop. Two keys on the keypad go bad. They offer to fix it, but they have to send to a repair facility. I cannot be without my laptop for 3 weeks. So, I bought the keypad myself and replaced it. They have guidelines to handle repairs just like Rand.
This was a first purchase for this user. I can understand if this was his 5 TND that did not work. It was his 1st and Rand followed guidelines just like any other company.
You buy something from the truckstop. It breaks later. Usually all they will do is exchange it for another one.
Since this was his first post I will be surprised if he responds to any posts after his in regards to this.
Thanks,
Mark -
OK Mark.... SURPRISE...... I have to work for a living and was driving while you were assuming I would not respond.....
The one option that I offered to solve my issue, and they refused to do, was to allow me to pay for a new device (retail) directly from them so that I may use this device while the new one arrives at my residence. I would then send this one back and not be without any GPS in the meantime.
WHAT UPSET ME ABOUT THE WHOLE IDEA, WAS THAT, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME EVER I BUY A "USED" ITEM.... ONLY DID IT BECAUSE THEIR ADVERTISEMENT CLEARLY STATES THAT ALL UNITS WERE INSPECTED AND REFURBISHED "LIKE NEW" Upon reading that, I was convinced that a Company such as this, would not allow their reputation blemished by false advertisements.
I saw an opportunity to save some hard earned money, after doing ample research and reading all the positive remarks about the TND. So I trusted them. They send me a dudd.... the least they could do was accommodate my needs by taking my credit card shipping me a device and then credit my card when the returned unit arrived at their site.
To answer your question as to how long I pressed the on/off switch.... I did it for maybe 30 seconds till my finger got sore...(pressed hard) lol... while I was on the line with a technician. He was the one to suggest that if I had another USB cable (any cable) and see if the laptop would recognize it. with the factory cable the pc did not acknowledge the connection at all.... with the other USB cable (my spare) the pc acknowledge the connection but gave me the error message that the device plugged in was inoperable, it gave me the option to click on the error message which took me to the device mgr and showed me the connected device that was inoperable.... YES,,,,, MY LAPTOP DOES HAVE 4 OTHER USB CONNECTIONS AND TRIED ALL, TO NO AVAIL.
BTW.... Mark, It is my understanding that we are not to insult other members of this site so please don't insult me. I make a good living and do not have the need to purchase an expensive TND even at the refurbished price it's not cheap, to 'GET A FREE LUNCH" I could pay for a large number of lunches for the money I spent in the purchase of this unit.
All I want is a TND that works "like new" as it is advertised. I was willing to pay the advertised price.. I now expect to get what is being advertised. Isn't that what the BBB is for????? to assist consumers to get the companies to do what is offered and advertised????
If I was living in a third world country I would expect nothing less than scams... but we are in America where consumers have a certain degree of protection. (I hope)
Don't we????
They assumed i wanted a new device for the same price... I clarified my intention to purchase a new device from them at retail, while i used this device in the meantime. I was trying to eliminate having no device during the time involved in shipping ... they flat out refused.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 4, 2013

Rand does not sell retail. To buy a new TND you would have to go to a dealer. This is probably what the rep was trying to explain.
The issue you are decribing about the PC is a PC issue. Not the USB cable or the TND. The TND probably showed connected, but it is part of the "handshaking". To establish a more in depth "communications" the PC has to establish two way "handshaking" first. It is basically saying I am here are your there? If the PC keeps trying to establish "handshaking" and after a period times out, you will get an error on the PC saying device not recognized.
Newer PC's tend to port share power now. Usually default settings are on energy savings so you have less power to the USB ports. As I suggested, try changing your power settings to high to supply more power to the USB ports.
If the 720 did not turn off, did you press the reset button, then let it soft boot back to the start up screen and then try the power button again?
As with any electronics, it may have worked at the warehouse, but in shipping it may have been tossed around enough to damage internal parts. It should have been packaged properly to prevent this.
Many times we see a person come on TTR with 1 post and then never return again. I am happy you have returned.
I never insult anyone, it was more in the line of a jest. With your first post you lead everyone to believe you wanted some monetary or a free item along with your exchange. You could have clarified everything in the first post so as to not lead others to speculate.
Try pressing the reset button and allow the TND to soft boot. It does not take much to press the power button down to allow it to respond. If you press down with extreme pressure you could damage the microswitch internally.
As for the PC issue. Go to your Control Panel and find the power settings. Turn them to high. You will have different settings if you are on battery or on AC. Battery will usually run a lower power setting to extend the battery life.
If you have any questions feel free to E-Mail me.
Thanks,
Mark
