Police Reward Good Drivers With Coffee

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) -- Happy holidays. Now pull over to the side of the road.
Motorists may be in for a surprise if they spot flashing red lights in their rearview mirrors in this Sacramento suburb during the holiday season.
Police are stopping law-abiding motorists and rewarding their good driving with $5 Starbucks gift cards.
A traffic officer came up with the idea to "promote the holiday spirit and enhance goodwill between the traffic unit and the motoring public," police Sgt. Tim Curran said.
Local businesses donated money to buy the gift cards.
"They raised a substantial amount of money," Curran said. "They'll be pulling over a lot of people."

That's real smart, give safe drivers incentive to go get a hot beverage while they are driving.

Why not hand them cell phones, or make up kits too.

If I get stopped there, who wants the coupon. I haven't had a cup of coffee since 1974. Don't think I want one now even if it is free.

Starbucks? I think I'd rather have a ticket. That's the most horrendous coffee I've ever had.

I am surprised at myself, but I agree with Ronno on this.

    This is a bad idea.

How much traffic disturbance will this cause? They got to pull over somewhere and we have enough delays from accident rubber-neckers.

Secondly, where is it authorized that the police have the authority to pull someone over for a non-violation? They are only authorized to pull someone over for probable cause, or for an administrative function - not for rewarding good driving.

I've just spent about ten minutes try to write a response here, but the more I type, the higher my blood pressure climbs... so I wind up deleting everything. (I try not to rant publicly.) But we are such a freakin' feel-good society anymore -- it's all about that warm and fuzzy feeling, dontcha know? :biggrin_25510:

And we're paying for this idiocy, too -- the officers' wages through our taxes and Starbucks through their exhorbitant prices for a mediocre product.

Well, at least I am comforted, somewhat, knowing that I do not contribute to the Starbucks coffers. Sixty-nine cents at Wawa does it for me. Starbucks can keep their over-priced, trendy brew.
