Everytime I read stories like this one, I shake my head in frustration. What are we coming to? And for the record, teachers who don't have kids of their own can still be great teachers. Common sense doesn't necessarily come only with pregnanacy. I am so glad we don't have a zero tolerance school. But on the flip side, we had a kid bring his knife to school last year and told one kid that he was going to use it on him because that boy had told on him for something else, and he told one of his friends that he was going to use it on his teacher. Five day suspension, that's it.

I never meant to imply common sense comes with pregnancy!! Heck no!!!

And two of my kids' BEST teachers and one of my BEST teachers never had children but they ALL had TONS of common sense, which is the main ingredient needed, IMHO, to be a good parent and/or a good teacher :yes2557:

I would dare say that these types of rules are developed with out any input from teachers, or parents, or even onsite school administrators. They are problably made under the advice of some security consultant that some district administrator office jockey hired that has never been in a class room environment.

I still blame the teachers though, I've read many, many stories like this I'm seeing a pattern of teachers over-reacting to situations. I can't believe the parents and teachers union would allow a policy to esculate events with a situtation like this. It would be nice to see the teachers union use their power to influence on an issue like this once in awhile.

I've talked to "kids" who are becoming teachers and their lack of common sense is mind-blowing. And they handcuffed this kid and one in kindergarten? WTF? That's insane!!!

I can't believe people like this are allowed to RUN a classroom and be in charge of 20 to 30 kids. Wow...

You guys talk like teachers have any say in what goes on. The year that I taught sixth grade, I got a new student in my class. He makes some threats, actually comes up with a hit list, made his plans public to the other kids of what he was going to do with his guns at school, tells other kids about the access to weapons that he has at home, and was quietly whispering in a few girls' ears in very graphic terms just how he was going to gut them. Do you think I could get anything done? This kid stayed in the class. I had parents showing up every day, doing shifts inside the classroom because they were afraid of this kid being around their children.

It's sickening how little control we and the teachers have in a classroom now. Parents aren't even welcome in class in my son's school. If you try to bring them their lunch by just walking into the school and handing it to them, they'll call the police and have you barred from the premises for trespassing.

The good teachers love the parents around, their input, their help wherever they can get it but even those teachers are bound and gagged by the school's rules and the school board's rules. It's terrible and it's sad.

I'm glad the parents came in to help monitor your class, Leannamarie. That is VERY scary and SO wrong on so many levels!!!!!

Liberals have nothing to do with it.

The school violence has been escalating over the last 10 years. They have been under both parties.

Liability is the reason for this.

Imagine, what one parent might think if they found out the teachers did not contact authorities concerning the breach in the safety of their child.

Teachers are placed in a no win situation. There are so many rules that have to be followed. Their job is at risk if they don't follow the rules.

I agree that this isn't really the teacher's fault. They are following the rules that they were given. It is the zero tolerance policy that needs a little gray area. The world has more than black and white!:biggrin_25510:

My uncle is an assistant principal at a jr high. He told me that zero tolerance policies are often passed by school districts because they are no longer able to effectively punish students any other way. 80% of the time they get zero support from parents, my uncle says parents who make excuses for their kids behavior rather than accepting responsibility and punishment of their child is now the rule rather than the exception. So they have no real choice but to pass these zero tolerance policies and turn it over to the authorities.
